Western Mass Weather for October 17, 2021

COOLER, NORTHWESTERLY FLOW USHERS AUTUMNAL AIR INTO THE WMASS REGION THROUGH TUESDAY… A MILDENING TAKES PLACE MID WEEK INTO THE LATE WEEK WHEN ANOTHER COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY, AND REINFORCES THE COOLER AIR INTO NEXT WEEKEND… NO WASHOUTS EXPECTED… MY 2022 WEATHER WALL CALENDAR SALE HAS LAUNCHED THIS WEEKEND… 7:50AM SUNDAY…

Good morning everybody, aside from the severe weather in the Dalton, MA area, I didn’t hear of any other damage reports from yesterday’s frontal passage so please post any reports or pics below if you experienced some hairy weather yourself.

For today, we’re in a whole new air mass, as northwest flow sets up thanks to a negatively-tilted upper level trough nosing into New York state about 3 miles above our heads, and huge surface high pressure area occupying the entire center of the U.S. Our departed surface low over Atlantic Canada that dragged the cold front through completes the northwest flow pattern, and wind will gust up to 25mph at times today.

We’ll start off mostly sunny, but fair weather clouds will build during the afternoon with highs in the mid 50s to low 60s, and a few lake effect rain showers in the Berkshires, western hilltowns and surrounding high terrain areas in VT, NY and CT.

Any showers abate tonight, and lows will drop into the upper 30s to mid 40s under partly cloudy skies.

For Monday, another partly sunny but even cooler day is on tap, with northwest gusts again up to 25mph, and highs only in the upper 40s in the high terrain and up in SVT/SWNH, and perhaps reaching the mid to upper 50s in the Pioneer Valley south and east in WMass, CMass and northern CT.

Lows look to be a bit cooler for Monday night, bottoming out into the mid 30s to low 40s, so we can’t rule out isolated patchy frost, but it’s pretty unlikely at the moment.

For Tuesday, we’ll get one more breezy day in with highs in the mid 50s to low 60s and northwest to westerly winds gusting up to 25mph or so under mostly sunny skies, with lows in the 40s.

High pressure will scoot south of us, and bring a milder southwest flow for Wednesday and Thursday which will put our highs squarely in the 60s under mostly sunny skies, so pleasant days are certainly ahead of us this coming week. Lows will reside in the 40s Wednesday night, but we have to watch Thursday night into Friday for another cold frontal passage associated with a storm tracking north of us.

This should bring some more showers through the region overnight into Friday morning, with highs in the low to mid 60s and clearing skies by Friday afternoon, but then the potential for another shot of cooler, autumnal air for the weekend, with highs possibly only in the 50s.

There are signals of a coastal rain storm for the weekend, but for now, the hope is that the frontal passage will produce enough flow to suppress it to our south, but I’ll keep you updated.

Have a great day, and please check out my calendar offering at the secure link below, it’s the 8th consecutive year I’ve produced it, and it’s really packed with great local color, interesting weather education, and it makes a great holiday gift too, thank you!
