Western Mass Weather for October 18, 2021

6:45AM-MON: COOL AND A BIT BLUSTERY WITH A MID-WEEK WARM UP… THURSDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MAY FEATURE INCLEMENT WEATHER, BEFORE WE COOL BACK DOWN BY NEXT SUNDAY, WITH POTENTIAL FOR SUB-FREEZING LOW TEMPERATURES BY EARLY NEXT WEEK… POSSIBLE FROST TONIGHT…

Good morning folks, we’re starting off chilly this morning and since I’ve refused to turn on the heat so far, I’m starting off chilly, too! #Brrrrr Temps are only in the 40s this morning, and we’ve got some clouds around, with a few showers possible in the southern Berkshires/Taconics, western Hampden County and northwest CT from lingering lake effect. This blustery, cooler northwesterly flow pattern lasts through tomorrow and then we warm up Wednesday/Thursday before another cold front cools us down late week, through the weekend, and into next week with some showers possible Thursday night into Saturday.

We’ll jump into all of our salient weather details below, but first let’s get a word from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo

SUMMARY:
We’ve got quite the meridional pattern set up (that just means a slower north-south flow pattern vs. a zonal pattern which is a faster west to east flow pattern across the country). You can see the virtual parade of troughs and ridges in the attached chart showing the jet stream undulating through the Northern Hemisphere.

As you can also see, we have a trough right over New England right now, and within it are a couple of shortwaves/disturbances, and underneath it is our cooler temperatures and gusty northwest winds, which will blow 20-30mph at times today and tomorrow.

Under partly to mostly sunny skies, highs will reach the upper 40s to mid 50s today, but not much higher than that – this represents the coolest day time temps for the Autumn of 2021 to date, and it looks like more of that is on the way for November.

We can’t rule out a shower this morning in southwest MA, northwest CT and adjacent eastern NY, with more sunshine developing this late morning into mid afternoon, before MORE clouds build back with additional scattered sprinkles or showers later in the afternoon and early evening.

Tonight will be cold, with lows in the mid to upper 30s, and so isolated patches of frost are possible in spots.

Tomorrow/Tuesday looks mostly sunny and blustery with northwest wind gusts to 25mph at times and highs in the 55-60º, with some low 50s up in southern VT. Lows will drop into the upper 40s to low 50s as southwest flow begins to set up with high pressure to our south.

Wednesday and Thursday look much milder, with highs in the 60s Wednesday and upper 60s to low 70s Thursday as westerly to southwesterly flow sets up across the region. Fair weather is expected both days, with mostly sunny skies again on Wednesday, with a few more clouds on Thursday as a cold front approaches once again.

By Thursday evening, a cold front draped southward off of a low passing to our north will bring a period of showers through the WMass region, which may linger into early Friday morning before we clear the clouds out, and develop at least a partly sunny day with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Lows will dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.

Then Saturday into early next week looks like we drop into a temperature pattern of 50s during the day and 30s at night, which is just about seasonable historically.

A coastal low may bring some rainfall on Saturday but we’ll have to refine that as the week progresses.

By next week, we may be seeing lows under 32º, so that something to monitor as well. Here comes November, folks.

I hope things go your way today, and that you have a great day!
