Western Mass Weather for July 11, 2020

[VERY WARM AND VERY HUMID TODAY WITH ISOLATED SHOWERS AND POSSIBLE STRONG THUNDERSTORMS LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING, THE CHANCE FOR WHICH WILL BE REPEATED ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, THIS TIME WITH LESS HUMIDITY… MONDAY HOLDS THE BEST POTENTIAL FOR STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH A WARM FRONT/COLD FRONT COMBO SWEEPING THE REGION…LOWERED HUMIDITY LATE TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE MUGGY AIR RELOADS FOR LATE WEEK… 5:55AM SATURDAY]

Good morning everybody, as Fay lifts away from the region, final showers are lifting north-northeast and out of here early this morning.

This will leave us with a mostly cloudy day with some sunny breaks or periods, and highs well into the 80s, possibly cresting 90 degrees south and east of Springfield. Dewpoints will be in the low 70s, so it will be very muggy today!

We will have a piece of energy moving east through the region, and while instability will strongest to our west over NY state, it could still fire some isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the WMass region down into CT, and we can’t rule out a couple of strong storms, either.

Any evening storms or showers will dissipate at night, and lows will settled down into the 65-70º range with patchy fog late.

Sunday looks like the pick of the weekend with highs in the mid 80s to low 90s under mostly sunny skies, less humidity (though dewpoints will still be in the 60s), and only a low chance for a spot hilltown or mountain shower or storm. Southwest winds gusts will blow 20-30mph at times, and lows will drop into the 60s at night.

On Monday, we’ll see our highest chance for scattered strong to severe thunderstorms as a final wave of energy moves through the WMass region that is associated with the upper level trough that drew Fay northward. This feature will kick northeast out of here early next week (by Tuesday), but it will push a warm front, and then a cold front through the region.

As such, we’ll get more humid, increase instability with surface heating under partly sunny skies, and we’ll have lifting mechanisms crossing the region to encourage air to rise, produce convection, and coalesce into showers, downpours and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Highs on Monday will reach the low to mid 80s, and lows will drop into the low to mid 60s.

Tuesday will be a transition day to drier weather for mid-week before more humidity surges again late week.

Highs on Tuesday will be in the low to mid 80s under partly sunny skies with a few showers possible, and lows in the mid 60s.

Wednesday looks like a high pressure day, sunny, much drier with dewpoints in the 50s (one can only hope), and highs in the low to mid 80s.

By Thursday and Friday, humidity starts to creep back up along with highs in the mid to upper 80s and the possibility for afternoon showers each day.

Have a great day!
