[WIND CHILL ADVISORIES CONTINUE THROUGH NOON TODAY… VERY COLD OUTSIDE SO BUNDLE UP AS WINDS WILL PICK UP A BIT AS THE MORNING WEARS ON… BLUSTERY DAY WITH BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS AT TIMES LEADS TO ANOTHER VERY COLD NIGHT WITH MORE BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS… BEAUTIFUL BUT COLD WEEKEND AHEAD… LOOKS LIKE AT LEAST A MODERATE SNOWSTORM IS POSSIBLE FOR THE WMASS REGION, WITH THE HEAVIEST AMOUNTS EAST OF I-91 AND SOUTH OF THE RT. 2 CORRIDOR IN EASTERN PORTIONS OF WMASS, CMASS, AND NORTHEAST CT… 6:55AM FRI]
Good morning folks, it is COLD out there, with temps in the single digits and in some cases, below zero in the western hilltowns and up in and near southern VT.
We’ve also had some flurries or light snow showers in portions of Litchfield County CT and the Berkshires. This is due to an anomalous upper level trough diving right through New England which will combine with onshore flow to give the outer Cape some Advisory-level snowfall accumulations this afternoon/evening.
Winds have been gusting up to 25-30mph overnight in our region, and should pick up a bit as we “warm” the surface this morning with day breaking.
Gusts out of the northwest should reach up to 35mph or so at times this morning and into the afternoon.
With highs in the upper single digits to mid teens, wind chills will be below zero at times today, but at least it will be mostly sunny after this upper low continues its dive southeast and clears its clouds out and away (CMass and northeast CT will clear last).
For tonight, another very cold night under clear skies with lows either side of 0º and wind gusting to 25mph, starting to lessen, but still able to produce wind chills down to 15 below zero. Additional wind chill headlines may be hoisted later.
For Saturday, winds should finally slacken, though the morning may be breezy. highs will be in the mid to upper teens under mostly sunny skies, but lows will again crash to either side of 0º as radiational cooling maximizes with dry air, clear skies, and calm wind.
Sunday gets “warmer” with highs in the mid to upper 20s under mostly sunny skies, so really we have a great winter weekend ahead! Clouds increase at night with lows in the mid teens.
Monday morning looks like it will become cloudy, and highs on Monday should reach the upper 20s to low 30s.
We’ll be watching a classic Miller B storm setup, where an original low will traverse the country, pick up moisture from the Gulf, and then weaken over Ohio and Pennsylvania, as it transfers energy to the Mid-Atlantic coastline with an upper low digging to the west of the secondary coastal low.
With cold high pressure to the north in Quebec, we have to watch the exact track of this storm to the northeast to see how much snow we will get Monday late afternoon into Tuesday.
For big WMass snows, we want a storm that tracks between Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island, but this as of now looks to track south of Nantucket.
For now, we could see a moderate-type snowfall, like a 3-6″ or 4-8″ type deal, but someone in southern New England is going to see 6-12″, and maybe over a foot in spots, so stay tuned for updates through the weekend as I track this storm and give you the latest.
After the storm ends, we should see milder temps work into the region, with a wintry mix/mess changing to rain by late week into early next weekend.
The fun never stops with New England weather. Have a great day!
