Good morning everybody, luckily we escaped yesterday without much in the way of inclement weather compared to what we could have seen.
Today, however, looks to be a different story. The Storm Prediction Center for the National Weather Service has us in a zone for potentially severe thunderstorms today, as the cold front separating us from drier cooler air from Canada is draped over western NY and slowly moving east.
This cold front will help to create some lift, but more importantly to focus moisture into showers and storms ahead of its leading edge. There is plenty of moisture to work with, allowing dewpoints to rise into the 70s in this tropical air mass. Breaks of sun will also allow for surface heating of the Earth, creating instability.
There could be a couple of rounds of showers and storms, and any that do form, will drop a LOT of water, and because of this a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through tomorrow afternoon.
Any severe thunderstorms that do develop will mainly have damaging wind and flooding rain as their main impacts, but an isolated tornado or two, as well as hail cannot be ruled out. An isolated supercell storm could form.
As the night wears on, ideal convection conditions will subside, and so we will see any die off through the night.
Tomorrow we could see some more showers and storms, but the threat is substantially less than today, as the frontal boundary will be pushing through our area, and we’ll start to see some drier air work in on Wednesday night.
Thursday through Saturday looks beautiful, with drier air, much more comfortable, and partly sunny conditions.
Have a great day!
