Winter Storm Warnings Continue… (2/25/22 updated 1:15pm)

MID-DAY UPDATE: THE BULK OF THE STORM IS THROUGH THE REGION BUT A SECONDARY STORM SOUTH OF THE VINEYARD IS NOW STRONGER THAN THE PRIMARY IN CENTRAL NY, SO COLDER AIR WILL TURN ANY SHOWERS OF ICE BACK TO SNOW AS THE AFTERNOON WEARS ON… ADDITIONAL VERY LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH EVENING… 1:10pm Friday…

Good afternoon everyone, I imagine everyone has been digging out now that the bulk of our snow came through the region and was deposited by late morning, capped by a snow-globe-y snow burst near the 11am hour in WMass.

Our primary storm in central NY is now weaker than the new secondary storm south of eastern New England over the ocean, which will pull colder air back through the column and turn any light icing back to snow showers by 2pm or so.

Some areas, especially in the Berkshires and north of the Pike will see an additional coating to an inch or so from here on out, and some areas will just see occasional snow showers that don’t accumulate, especially the further south you go in the WMass region.

The best chance for an additional inch or so is in the Berkshires up into southern VT and the western hilltowns.

These snow showers will last until about 6pm or so, and then precipitation will fully quit to the east, and lows plummeting into the single digits with clearing skies late.

High pressure moves in for the weekend, and Saturday looks quite sunny and cold with highs in the 20s to near 30º and lows in the teens.

Sunday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 30s before a cold front slices through with a snow shower, and drops our lows back into the single digits.

Monday looks quite cold, with moderating temps into Thursday with plenty of fair weather to go around, by which time we may be dealing with a snowy Alberta Clipper system, which could produce some light accumulating snow in the WMass region.

That’s how things look for now, I will update again by late afternoon with any updates. Thanks for all of your reports today!

[MID-MORNING UPDATE] SLEET HAS PUSHED UP TO THE LEVEL OF THE MASSPIKE… SNOW SHOWERS CONTINUE WITH SOME SLEET MIX TO THE NORTH…BURST OF SNOW AND SLEET MOVING INTO THE VALLEY AT 9:45AM… PRECIP SHIELD IS BREAKING UP AND BY 10:30-11AM THE DRY SLOT MOVES THROUGH… ROADS WILL IMPROVE SECOND HALF OF THE DAY AS CREWS GET ON TOP OF THINGS IN COMBINATION WITH HIGHER LATE FEB SUN ANGLE…SOME STRONGER EASTERLY WINDS GUSTS UP TO 40MPH POSSIBLE IN THE BERKSHIRES, EAST SLOPES OF THE BERKSHIRES AND SVT/TACONICS THROUGH THE NOON HOUR… 9:40am Fri…

Good morning everybody, the front-end thump portion of the storm is winding down between 10-11am from west to east. At my place in the valley, we have almost half a foot of snow, and saw an average of 1″ per hour snowfall rates from 3:30am to 8:30am.

Generally this storm should end up producing snow accumulations on the low end of the ranges, a general 4-8″ of snowfall, with some 10″ amounts.

We have a final burst of snow and sleet moving through the Berkshires now (snow north, sleet south) and that is likely to re-coat any plowed or shoveled walkways before the dry slot fully moves into and through the region.

There may be some freezing drizzle or light sleet or snow showers late morning into early afternoon, then we’ll look to areas north of the Pike for some additional light snow showers in the afternoon.

Watch for blowing snow at higher elevations, especially west of the I-91 corridor, which could lower visibility and re-coat plowed roads.

I will update you by 1pm, but would love to hear how much snow you have on the ground if you’ve gone out and measured, where you are, and what you are seeing currently. Thank you!

I know some of you are sick of winter, but it sure is pretty out there!! Thanks for the reports so far!

DISCUSSION:
Good morning everybody, I’ve been up since 3:30am monitoring our storm and am choosing to pull snow totals down in northern CT, and to also mention that the main 6-12″ area cited above in the “central region / zone 2″ is more likely to see totals in the lower half of that range (6-9″) in southern parts of WMass and CMass, but we’ll see how it plays out – the range stands, and up to a foot could fall even in the Pioneer Valley N of the Pike.

We have anywhere between 1-4″ on the ground as of the 7am hour, and snow is falling moderately to heavily across the region and the morning commute is substantially impacted with snow covered roads, slippery conditions, and lowered visibilities.

Snowfall rates of 1-2″ per our are possible, so take it easy on the roads if you have to get out and about. Blowing of snow is expected later today with easterly winds gusting to 25mph, especially in northern MA, SVT and SWNH.

MORE ICE IN NORTHERN CT
The most notable change to snowfall totals is in southern parts of northern CT, where sleet mixed in early as a wave of mid-level warm air worked through the region before dawn, which was not expected, and probably occurred because dry air at the storm’s onset was lightening the precip shield, so heavy snow wasn’t able to keep cold established at all levels yet, but that appears to have changed.

In this area I pulled totals down a couple of inches to 2-6″ from 4-8″, but still expect 4-8” with sleet in northern half of northern CT and southern CMass.

Anyway, we’re off and running, and sleet will start working toward the MassPike by mid morning and later morning north of there. How far it tracks exactly will be shown as we watch it, but looks like it could make it all the way to Rt. 2 and even to the MA/VT-NH line by late morning or early afternoon before the heavy stuff moves east of us.

The bulk of expected snow will fall by early afternoon, and then periods of light to perhaps moderate snow showers will continue mostly north of the MA Pike throughout the afternoon, lasting longest along and north of Rt. 2 where additional light to perhaps moderate accumulations will fall (though the ranges offered cover the whole storm through tonight).

I will update in a few hours so stay tuned, as I will be here reporting and on Twitter all day and evening.

I hope you have a great day, and if my work is useful or valuable to you and yours, please click below to see the myriad of support options available during my 2022 Member/Supporter Drive. Thx!
