Western Mass Weather on Labor Day, Sept. 6, 2021

PATCHY DENSE FOG IN SPOTS THIS MORNING… OVERALL, DRIER WEATHER WILL PERSIST OVER THE NEXT 7 DAYS WITH WED/THURS BEING A POSSIBLE HIGHER IMPACT DAY WITH STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE… OTHERWISE, WE’RE IN GOOD SHAPE AS WE TAKE A BREATHER FROM MOSTLY ACTIVE WEATHER… LARRY STAYS OUT TO SEA… 7:40AM MON…

Good morning everybody, and Happy Labor Day. We’ve got patchy dense fog in spots, but this will burn off over the next couple of hours.

The air is quite saturated with temps in the low to mid 60s, and dewpoints about the same, hence the fog formation.

We’ve got a mid/upper level shortwave that is swinging through the Great Lakes and through northern New England overnight, and this feature will likely generate a few scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm this afternoon into the early evening, especially along/north of the Rt. 2 corridor in MA, VT and NH.

The cold air aloft associated with this feature will steepen the temp gradient from surface to sky (warmer at the ground level, colder higher up), which will induce rising air to combine with some of our remnant moisture today to spark up some activity.

Regardless of all of that, today will see sunshine developing, and we should get in a partly to mostly sunny day with highs well into the 70s, with some areas in the Springfield/Hartford portion of the valley near 80º.

Humidity will lower by this evening, and lows tonight will dip into the upper 40s to low 50s – a tad chilly under mostly clear skies!

Tuesday is gorgeous, mostly sunny, high pressure moves in to our southwest, light wind, highs in the 70s, peace in the valley. Lows dip into the mid to upper 50s.

For Wednesday, we start off with mostly sunny skies, but we’ll watch another storm passing well north of us drag its attendant cold front eastward toward New England.

This will increase cloud cover by afternoon, but with southwest flow and a high to our south, we should see temps rise up into the upper 70s to low 80s, which will make Wednesday the warmest day over the next 7!

The timing is not totally clear as to when we can expect our cold front to pass into the region. It could be Wednesday evening or as late as Thursday morning at this point.

Expect some scattered showers and a couple of thunderstorms at least for Wednesday late afternoon into the overnight hours, and I will refine timing and impacts as we get closer.

If we get the cold front to move in during Wednesday afternoon, we could be dealing with some strong to potentially severe thunderstorms, but if the front comes through at night, we may see less intense storms.

Lows Wednesday night will only dip into the low to mid 60s, which will be comparatively warm in relation the following several days.

By Thursday, clouds during the first half of the day should thin out and reveal at least some partial sunshine late in the day with highs in the 70s and a few morning showers possible. We clear more fully Thursday night into Friday with lows in the 50s.

Friday through Sunday continues to look analogous to the flat calm of a lake on a peaceful day: Highs low to mid 70s, lows low to mid 50s, light wind, mostly sunny skies, mostly clear nights.
