Western Mass Weather for September 7, 2020

[A LOVELY LABOR DAY HAS ARRIVED… SOME CLOUDS MAY BUILD IN LATE IN THE DAY CLOSER TO AND AFTER SUNSET, BUT NO SHOWERS EXPECTED… SOUTH WINDS MAY GUST OVER 20MPH THIS AFTERNOON… WARMER AND MORE HUMID TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY WITH SOUTHERLY FLOW… SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY NIGHT WITH A COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE, WHICH SWEEPS THE REGION, AND BRINGS DRIER AND COOLER AIR BACK FOR NEXT WEEKEND, WHICH MAY END WITH A FEW SHOWERS BY SUNDAY NIGHT… 8:05AM MONDAY]

Good morning everybody, man oh man, the past two days have been super lovely, and today will be no exception!

We’re going to enjoy mostly sunny skies today thanks to high pressure centered over the Canadian Maritimes and its southwest-oriented axis shooting right through New England.

There is a frontal boundary producing copious strong to severe thunderstorms out near the eastern Great Lakes that will try to press into this front, but it will lose that battle and dry up. The only thing we could see from that fight is a few clouds building west of I-91 late today and overnight.

Highs today will be in the upper 70s to low 80s and lows will drop into the upper 50s to low 60s.

As high pressure slides southeast, and as strong low pressure north of the Great Lakes arcs up to the northeast, a resultant southwesterly flow will develop across New England on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is a land-based flow, and as such, high temps will be supported to rise into the low to mid 80s for Tuesday and Wednesday under mostly sunny skies, with increased humidity, and lows in the low 60s.

By Wednesday late afternoon into the evening, clouds will be on the increase as our cold frontal boundary will finally press into (and ultimately, through) the New England region.

At this point, it looks like scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will develop across the WMass region overnight Wednesday and through Thursday, when highs are expected to rise into the upper 70s to low 80s.

Any lingering showers Thursday night will abate as the front swings through, and lows will drop into the mid to upper 50s.

We should then get another 2-3 day period of sunnier, drier, and cooler weather for Friday into most of next weekend.

Highs look to only reach the upper 60s in the high terrain to mid 70s in valley locations with very low humidity – Autumnal!

I will update you on shower potential for the second half of next weekend as that becomes more clear, but let’s count our blessings for calm weather after the heat waves and severe weather we encountered over the Summer of 2020.

Enjoy your day.
