Western Mass Weather for September 22, 2021 – Happy Fall!

6:45A-WED: HAPPY AUTUMNAL EQUINOX! LATE-WEEK UNSETTLED PATTERN SLOWLY SETTLES INTO THE WMASS REGION… TODAY AND TOMORROW FEATURE SCATTERED LIGHT SHOWERS AT TIMES… LATE THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY WILL SEE HEAVIER SHOWERS, POSSIBLY LASTING WELL INTO FRIDAY NIGHT… WEEKEND LOOKS OK, PERIODS OF SUN AT TIMES, BUT SATURDAY MORNING AND SUNDAY AFTERNOON MIGHT SEE A FEW ISOLATED SHOWERS…

Good morning everybody, we’ve already had a few showers move in overnight, and we can expect occasional light showers here and there today, tonight and tomorrow, before the main cold frontal rains move in for very late Thursday night and through Friday, with some downpours possible.

We’ll jump into the double–dashed details below, but first let’s get a word from our local and delicious sponsor. #NomNom

SYNOPSIS:
–After some morning fog burns off in central MA and southern NH, and maybe a few other spots, we’ll be… cloudy
–High pressure has pushed further east of us, and its influence on our weather is quickly waning, so in comes the moisture from the south and west
–However, there isn’t much lift in the atmosphere, so we’ll just see some south-to-north tracking mainly light scattered showers today and tonight, with low pressure still well west of us
–Highs will reach the low to mid 70s, with lows in the low to mid 60s with patchy fog around, and increased humidity
–The Autumnal Equinox passes by at 3:20pm, so be sure to wave goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall #AndSoItBegins
–However, the beginning of Fall is looking fairly anemic at the moment, with no big cool-downs noted
–For Thursday, more of the same. Some light showers, some drizzle, highs in the mid to upper 70s, so a bit warmer, humid, and continued southerly to southeasterly flow
–Our big upper low centered today over the mid-Mississippi Valley will continue to track northeast into southern Canada, and as it approaches our longitude, we’ll see more numerous showers very late Thursday night into and through much of Friday
–Lows Thursday night will dip into the low to mid 60s, continued humid
–For Friday, the bulk of the rain from this system will move into the region, with heavy rain at times, and potential for thunderstorms
–Some areas may see over an inch of rainfall (see attached chart), so while Thursday looked like the rainiest day early this week, it now appears to be Friday
–Highs will be cooler, in the upper 60s to low 70s
–Some guidance shows showers clearing out by Friday night, but I’m not convinced yet, so I’ll get back to you on that
–I still think a few showers are possible, with lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s
–Hopefully we’ll get Saturday to clear out with some sunshine and highs in the low 70s, but clouds may linger in the morning
–Sunday looks to at least start sunny, but I think at least one or maybe two waves of low pressure will track west to east around the southern flank of that upper low, so we’ll have to refine the Sunday into early next week forecast, as it’s still unclear to me how things are going to evolve

Regardless, we’ll be dealing with mostly seasonable to slightly above-seasonable temps for late September.

Have a great day!
