Western Mass Weather for October 9, 2021

STEW-MAKING WEATHER TODAY… ONSHORE, NORTHEASTERLY FLOW DRIVES OCEAN AIR SOUTHWEST INTO THE WMASS REGION WITH SOME DRIZZLE PATCHES AND A FEW LIGHT SHOWERS… A FEW MORE SHOWERS AND ADDITIONAL GRAY MALAISE TOMORROW WILL LEAD TO AN INCREASINGLY SUNNY, WARMER WEEK AHEAD, THAT LOOKS QUITE DRY AT THE MOMENT… 8:15AM SAT…

Good morning everybody, we’re atmospherically sitting between ridge of upper level higher pressures to our west, a surface high pressure system centered over Atlantic Canada driving ocean air southwest into our region behind a cold frontal passage overnight, and a coastal low that is jogging north along the east coast toward New England, making its closest pass tomorrow/Sunday.

It’s a trio of gray, doldrum-y stillness in the WMass region, and so I’m giving this a 10 out of 10 for stew or soup-making conditions.

Alternatively, you could take a spin up Rt. 100 in southern VT, as I hear the foliage is really starting to crank in the southern Green Mountains these days.

As for our weather, we have a few light showers tracking east to west into CMass and even a few easternmost towns in Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden Counties this morning, with a bit of fog in CMass, and some drizzle in other areas.

We’ll see this very light, scattered activity at times today, dry at other times, as low level moisture is trapped underneath an upper level ridge, so it’ll be a mostly still day.

Still days are good for calming the mind. If the gray is depressing for you, you could consider reading a book you enjoy, listening to music, cooking food, or working out, doing some yoga or qigong… or you can stew in your own juices, I’ve done that plenty, too, though I’ve found it just creates more of itself, which isn’t very enjoyable. Reading and napping is better. :-)

Highs will only read the upper 50s to low 60s, maybe even some mid 50s over southern VT! Lows tonight will drop into the upper 40s to low 50s.

On Sunday, the coastal low to our south approaches, but sort of gets shunted away, by the ridge forcing the low from a northward track, to northeastward, to eastward and away over the course of the day and night.

Still some light scattered showers are possible at any time tomorrow, including the morning, with the steadiest rain reaching up to perhaps the level of the MA Pike in the afternoon, and then tracking east and away by night time.

Highs will reach the upper 50s to mid 60s with lows near 50º as showers come to an end late. I don’t think more than a quarter to a third of an inch will fall.

Then we’ve got a pretty dry week ahead, with partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies Monday and Tuesday, with increasing sunshine Wednesday through the end of the week, with maybe a few showers on Wednesday afternoon.

Highs will warm as well, reaching the upper 60s to low 70s Monday and Tuesday, and then the low to mid 70s Wednesday through Friday, before a cool down next weekend.

It’s a very mild October to be sure, substantially above average, with no sign of potential frost until late month, so enjoy the extended mild conditions while we have them, and post pics of your soup or stew making activities and creations below this post later today!

Have a great day!
