Good morning everybody, temperatures didn’t plummet as much as expected due to overspreading of high thin cloud deck, but it’s still cold with temps in the teens to low 20s. It will be dry and increasingly cloudy all day with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. Snow will begin around or just after sunset, and I will list things out below.
–Coastal low pressure develops in the eastern Carolinas and tracks northeast today
–Meanwhile, high pressure overhead tracks east-northeast into New Brunswick, Canada
–The low will then hug the coast, and track just off the Jersey coast, close to Long Island and pass over the Cape and the Islands
–This setup is not conducive to all snow, because you want the high due north of us, and the low due south of Martha’s Vineyard, which would inhibit flow of warmer air aloft into our region
–As such, we will get an initial thump of snow tonight, and once it starts, it will become moderate to heavy and accumulate
–So, we get most of our accumulation tonight, and then as warm air moves in aloft, we will transition to sleet and freezing rain during by and during the pre-dawn hours of Friday AM
–Because of the low’s track, we could also see the dry slot move into parts of the region, especially south of the Pike
–This may cut off heavier precip, but introduce freezing drizzle into the picture
–We should see some folks change to plain rain in northern CT, but historically models under-do surface cold in our sweet valley, and there isn’t a huge south-north surge of warm air, so icing may hang in here after sunrise
–As the storm moves east of our longitude, we should flip back to snow, and especially so in the Berkshires, western hilltowns and SVT, where another inch of snow could fall
–SNOW AMOUNTS: 2-4″ generally along and south of the Mass Pike in the valley areas, 3-6″ north of the Pike in WMass and CMass, and 4-8+” in the western hilltowns, Berkshires, SVT, and SW.NH, and in the northernmost towns of Worcester County
–Some higher peaks in the southern Greens could see over 10″
–The whole system abates by noon or the early afternoon with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s
–The weekend looks cold and partly sunny, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s
–We cloud back up Sunday evening, and some light snow is possible into Monday morning with another weak system, and a coating to an inch can’t be ruled out
–Cool and fair weather continues next week, and Thanksgiving is still looking good and partly sunny
Have a great day, and I will update you later today around 5pm or so as the snow is moving into the region, and if you haven’t already please considering supporting my work by buying a holiday gift of local color for you and/or yours by clicking my 2019 weather wall calendar info/order link below, thank you!
