Good evening everybody, while this is not a major snowstorm by any stretch, it is the first accumulating widespread snow and ice storm of the season, AND it’s happening in the middle of November before Thanksgiving, which is early.
Having said that, we’ve got a lot to talk about, so I’m going to list things out with zest below. This is my #ZestList, from me to you, here goes:
–Tonight, the coldest air of the new cold season advects into the region
–Lows will plummet into the upper single digits to low/mid teens
–It’s basically January tonight, so bundle up if you are heading out, and stay as warm as you can
–It will be mostly clear and winds will slacken. This with bone dry air in place will allow for such cold temps
–Very strong high pressure builds over the region overnight, and will position itself to the northeast of our region, holding cold surface air across WMass
–For tomorrow, we might get some sunny periods, or dim sunshine through high to mid level clouds early
–However, it will not be a sunny day, as clouds should be building in here before noon
–So, we’re cloudy through the day, but snow will be fast on the Sun’s heels, and snow should break out between 6-8pm or so from south to north, CT first, then MA, then VT/NH
–And that’s part of this story, is that the storm is moving a bit faster than thought yesterday
–Highs will only be in the 20s tomorrow, and this combined with very dry air will set up an excellent overrunning surface that you need for a front-end THUMP of heavy accumulating snow tomorrow night
–You can see in the first map attached the dew points at 7pm tomorrow should be somewhere in the single digits with temperatures in the low to mid 20s by that time
–That’s a dewpoint depression value in some cases of 15-20 degrees, which means as heavy precip falls into it, not only will be all snow at first, but it will cool the surface down further for a time
–Also, the ground will have been sufficiently cooled
–With snow moving at night, and picking up in intensity, it will stick rather quickly, and road conditions will become slick fast, certainly before midnight

–You can see the thump of snow depicted in the second map around 9pm
–The next two maps show the temperatures a half a mile up, and a mile up respectively
–You can see that temps at those levels are STILL below freezing west of I-91 and north of Rt. 9 generally speaking
–This isn’t a depiction of what’s going to happen, but it shows that when you take temps at the surface, a half mile up, a mile up, along with very low dew point temps and heavy precip that we could snow for several hours at an inch/hour on average
–I do still think we go to a period of sleet and freezing rain south of Rt. 2 before sunrise on Friday morning
–This is because the storm track is still hugging Long Island, the way it looks now (see map), and that allows warmer air aloft to try and mix in above our heads
–If you want all snow, you want that low center to be further south than that position as it tracks northeast
–Being that close also puts us close to the dry slot, which in the “comma shape” of a low center, is the southwestern part of it where dry air is getting entrained inward
–That means that we could see flip over to freezing drizzle for a time Friday morning as low level moisture remains
–Finally, as you can see in the final map, we could flip back to snow for additional light accumulations by late morning into early afternoon as thing speeds away
SNOWFALL AMOUNTS
–I am going with 3-6″ of snowfall for much of the region, especially along and north of the MassPike in WMass and CMass
–South of there down into northern CT it should be more like 2-5″ with some more ice and possibly plain rain mixing in for a time
–The Berkshires, Litchfields, Taconics, western hilltowns, southern VT and southwest NH (especially northern Cheshire County) could see more like 4-8″ of snow with sleet and freezing rain on top
— I wouldn’t be surprised (assuming this colder trend holds) to see the high peaks of the southern Greens getting 6-10″, maybe even a foot in a couple of spots
–It all gets out of here by Friday afternoon, and any melting or liquid precip that does fall could re-freeze late Friday night as we fall down into the upper 20s with fresh snow and ice on the ground
–The weekend looks decent, with partly sunny skies, and highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s
–There may be another weak wave of low pressure that brings some light snow to our neck of the woods Sunday night into Monday morning
Ok, that about does it for now, I hope you have a great night, and I will update you in the morning, and will also be on WRSI The River 93.9FM with Monte Belmonte as well.

Prepare thyself for some significant winter travel impacts Thursday night through the early afternoon on Friday, and stay tuned to the page, as I will post tomorrow morning, tomorrow evening before snow onset, and again before midnight once the storm is underway and new information is in.
And please share this information so others can be aware and kept up to date. Thank you.

SNOW AND ICE STORM COMING FOR WMASS THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING… CONCERN FOR EXTENDED ICING TO IMPACT FRIDAY AM COMMUTE… WIND ADVISORIES POSTED FOR TODAY IN FRANKLIN, HAMPSHIRE AND WORCESTER COUNTIES… MORE LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT… #AndSnowItBegins (6:35am Wed)
Good morning everybody, a lake effect snow finger has pushed into the Berkshires and WMass this morning, and is currently running along the MassPike west of Exit 3, so visibilities will be reduced at times, and a coating to an inch is possible in spots.
Otherwise, we cold this morning, with plenty of clouds around as this band works through. Temps are currently in the mid 20s to low 30s, and dew point temps are in the teens and even single digits in some cases! Very dry air. This is part of the setup for our upcoming winter storm.
You’re busy, I’m busy, everybody’s busy! So much busy-ness! Based on this inevitable fact, I present to you today’s List of Pontifications. Ready?
–Snow showers clear the area today, which will beget clearing skies, sunshine, and wind gusts 30-45mph out of the northwest. Yippeee!!!!
–As you can in the attached map, dew point temps are wicked low, and those colder values to the north will be moving into our region tonight and tomorrow
–Highs today will only be in the upper 20s to low 30s. Hello, Winter weather
–Tonight, high pressure rides east-northeast up the St. Lawrence River Valley in southeastern Canada, and drops temps into the high single digits to teens, brr!!!
–For tomorrow, we start sunny, but cloud up during the day as an upper low positions itself in the Ohio Valley
–Highs Thursday are again in the upper 20s to low 30s, and bone dry. This will provide an excellent overrunning surface for a thump of snow Thurs night
–Our upper low will guide a surface low up the coastline, but it looks to track very close to the southern New England coast by late Thursday night into Friday AM
–I expect snow to break out across the region from south to north after sunset, generally between 6-9pm
–As precip falls initially, it will cool down the surface even further as it evaporates before saturating the column
–This will produce lows in the 20s Thursday night
–We should see 2-4″ of snow across the region, with more like 3-7″ in the western hilltowns and SVT/SWNH before a changeover to sleet and freezing rain during the pre-dawn hours of Friday AM

——————-
–As you can see in the attached map showing temps a mile above our heads, the coast-hugging storm will bring in some warmer temps aloft
–However, it will still be sub-freezing at the surface
–I believe this will set us up for a prolonged period of sleet and freezing rain across much of the region, on top of the snow we get overnight
–Sleet is the more likely icy precip type, but freezing rain will mix in too. We should change to rain along and south of the Rt. 9 corridor and east of I-91 Fri. AM
–It’s possible that a few spots stay mainly snow in the northeastern Berkshires, highest elevations of Franklin County and up into the spine of the southern Greens, and more like 5-9″ could fall there
–Any ice and rain during Friday morning, may change back to a brief period of snow as the storm pulls east of us, and precip shuts off by afternoon. Highs will be in the 30s
–The weekend looks partly sunny with highs upper 30s to low 40s, although a weak wave of low pressure may bring some snow showers Sunday night
–It looks colder to start the week next week, but Thanksgiving is still looking like fair weather at the moment.
Bundle up today and stay warm!! Have a great day, and I will post an update tonight about our first widespread winter storm of the new season this evening.
