Good morning everybody, after we get through this patchy fog this morning, we’ve got another potent atmospheric wave and frontal passage to get through today, with another chance for isolated power outages, and this time for slippery roads not caused so much by falling leaves (though that is possible), but due to a coating to an inch of SNOW expected for higher-elevation parts of the Berkshires, western hilltowns, and southern VT this evening after sunset!
There’s lots to talk about, so I am going to employ the double–dashes to handle the execution my salient-point listing activities, and shall get down to business forthwith, with haste, as well as vim and vigor #Engage
SUMMARY
–Patchy fog will burn off this morning and reveal a nice, mostly sunny day.
–Some of this fog may have caused some slippery surfaces with some temps at or just below freezing
–Dynamic weather is coming… huh? You wouldn’t know it by looking at the sky later this morning, but it’s coming
–Highs will reach the low to upper 50s, and our weather looks good through early afternoon
–Meanwhile, a potent little low pressure wave along another cold front will be sweeping northeast toward New England (it already is)
–Clouds will start to build in by early to mid afternoon
–A difference between yesterday and today is that the freezing levels aloft will be drawn much closer to the surface
–Another difference is that there is less moisture to work with, so we won’t get as much as rain as we did yesterday
–Regardless, between 3-8pm is when our little weather wave works through the region, starting as showers and thunderstorms
–The SPC just upgraded the region of central/eastern Hampden County east into the Worcester Metro region and south into all of CT for an increased chance of severe thunderstorms
–There will be little instability, but substantial wind shear present
–Combined with the lowered freezing levels, the chance for larger hail is there, along with strong, gusty winds as these storms pass through, capable of isolated damage
–Another icy precip type called graupel may also fall, which is when snowflakes encounter supercooled water droplets and have a casing of rime ice form around them… they sort of crumble into bits when they hit the ground
–Isolated power outages are also possible as winds will in general be gusting 30-50mph as this approximately 2-hour stormy impact sweeps the region
–In fact, we can’t even rule out the potential for a weak tornado in northern CT, either, but it’s a very low chance, like yesterday
–So while we have the severe weather threat as mentioned above, we also have rain changing to snow in the Berkshires, western hilltowns, southern VT, and potentially even in parts of northern Litchfield County CT and the Monadnock in southwest NH
–We’re getting it all today folks!
–Southwest winds will be shifting around to the northwest as the storm runs right through southern New England, and will pull colder air, flipping us from rain to snow in northwest MA and SVT
–In fact, by 9pm, we could see a coating to an inch of snow on the ground in some areas, maybe even up to 2″ in the southern Green Mountains!
–Total rainfall where it stays all rain shouldn’t exceed a half inch
–Fortunately, this is a blast of weather that won’t stick around, and it will be gone long before midnight, with a few left over mountain flurries possible
–Lows will drop into the upper 20s to low 30s and it will be breezy, but watch for slick spots
–For Sunday, we have a cooler day on the way with partly sunny skies and highs in the 40s, with more clouds increasing late in the day
–We will have a coastal storm this time developing southeast of Nantucket, and as such, it should only be spreading mixed rain and snow showers into the region tomorrow night with light precipitation generally and lows in the 30s
–A few morning showers of rain or snow for Monday will lead to increasing sunshine and highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s
–Tuesday through Wednesday looks like more fair weather is on the way, with highs in the 40s on Tuesday and highs in the 50s on Wednesday
–By Thursday into Friday, another frontal boundary works into the region with some scattered showers, and cooler conditions by Friday
Let’s stay focused on this afternoon and evening, as we’ve got some surface turbulence coming through with a wide variety of weather impacts and conditions across the greater WMass region.
Have a great day, and I will keep you updated with another update by early afternoon as to how things are progressing.
