LIGHT SNOW/SLEET ACCUMULATIONS OVERNIGHT IN SVT, NORTHERN BERKSHIRES, AND HIGH TERRAIN FO WESTERN FRANKLIN, WESTERN HAMPSHIRE, AND NORTHERN WORCESTER COUNTIES BEFORE CHANGING TO RAIN TOMORROW MORNING… MORE WIDESPREAD SNOW AND SLEET POTENTIAL EXISTS WITH A STORM FOR THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY, WHICH MAY BE FIRST ACCUMULATING SNOW FOR MANY IN THE WMASS REGION… (7:00PM MON)
Good evening everybody, lots to talk about as we continue to see active and more and more wintry precip chances into the weekend. The good news (if you hate rain and snow) is that next week looks a bit milder and certainly drier. In fact, Thanksgiving looks pretty nice, actually.
As for our details, I will list them out below, and give thanks and praises that Mrs. Feinstein taught me well in 7th grade Typing class, as I can type 80 words per minute. Being a musician helps with this rhythmic incessant (and at times, aggressive) tap, tap, tapping sound that seems to fill most of my days, weeks, and months in my graying middle ages.
I will break the rest of this report down into three sections: 1. For our storm tonight and tomorrow, 2. A discussion about a very cold day upcoming on Wednesday and 3. Our wintry storm Thursday night and Friday.
Before that, I just wanted to remind you that my 2019 Weather Wall Calendar order period ends THIS Sunday. If you need one, or need holiday gifts for others, just click below for info, or to order:

STORM #1: TONIGHT AND TOMORROW
Lows tonight will dip into the low to mid 30s. Currently, we have dry air in place currently. Obviously, with a storm system moving northeast into our region, the column will fill with more moisture.
However, dewpoint depressions (i.e. the spread between the air temperature and the dew point temperature) are somewhat large over northwest MA and up into SVT and SWNH (i.e. more than 10 degrees). This means that as precip falls into the dry air at the surface, it will evaporate at first. As precip evaporates that process cools the surrounding air, and drops the air temperature.
In addition, during the pre-dawn hours (see attached map/graphic), temps up to a mile above our heads will be below freezing. This indicates to me that there will be a period of snow and sleet in the high terrain of SVT, SWNH (northern Cheshire Cty, especially), the northern Berkshires, and western hilltowns in Franklin and Hampshire counties, and possibly N. Worcester County highlands. A coating to as much as 2″ of snow and sleet is possible overnight in these areas.
Valley locations could see some mixed rain, snow and sleet (probably more sleet and rain) as well. However, ALL levels of the atmosphere in our region will be overwhelmed with warmer air, and we will all flip to rain except for the highest peaks above 2000 feet or so by tomorrow morning.
It will rain heavy at times tomorrow morning, and add up to about .75″ to 1.25″ or so in our region, with the heaviest likely south and east closer to the storm tracks, which moves right over southeast MA.
By noon to early afternoon, the rain should clear out of here. It should end up being a mostly cloudy day with highs in the low to mid 40s and lows in the 20s as northwest winds start to gust to 25mph or so.
WINDY AND COLDEST AIR OF LATE 2018
By Wednesday morning, some Wind Advisories may need to be hoisted, as west and northwest winds are expected to gust 30-50mph at times with highs only in the low to mid 30s! So even though it will be mostly sunny, wind chill temps will drop into the single digits and teens during the day, so bundle up! In fact, lows will PLUMMET into the low teens for many, and possibly the upper single digits!
This is mid-winter cold, people, so prepare yourselves for this brutal blast.
Thursday is also sunny and cold, with highs in the 30s again, and clouds will be increasing during the day.
STORM #2: THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY
Yet another storm system will be tracking northeast from the Mid Atlantic region. You can see the attached precip and pressure maps for reference. Those aren’t what’s going to happen, but give you an idea.
The main differences between tomorrow’s storm and the one for late week is that A) There will be a more established, antecedent cold air mass in place and B) high pressure will be positioned to our north or northeast, helping to keep the cold in longer, and further south.
Now, the track at this time looks to move the low along the south coast, which would still allow a change to rain for most of us along and south of the Rt. 2 corridor on Friday morning. But if the storm tracks a little more south, it will pull colder air further south.
The potential exists for a plowable snowstorm for folks north of Rt. 2 in northern MA, and especially in SVT, SWNH, and the western hilltowns.
Light accumulations are also possible thorughout all of WMass, CMass, and even in northern CT during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning, but that is just an early look and feel for this system.
I will keep you updated all week long on our late-week system, as changes will certainly present themselves.
I hope you have a great night, and if you live in the high terrain, be alert traveling early tomorrow morning.

SNOW AND ICE BEFORE DAWN TOMORROW AM IN BERKSHIRES, SVT AND HILLTOWNS WITH LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE… SLEET TO RAIN FOR THE REST OF US IN THE VALLEY FOR TUES… WIND CHILLS ON WEDNESDAY COULD DIP INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS… WINTRY STORM ON FRIDAY WITH SNOW AND ICE FOR SOME COULD AFFECT FRIDAY AM DRIVE…(6:35am Mon)
Good morning everybody, we are waking up to a cold and mostly clear morning, except cloudiness is observed over SVT, the northern Berkshires/Taconics, and parts of Franklin County. Temps are in the 20s, so bundle up if you’re on the way out.
These clouds should lift north and give us a mostly sunny day until clouds build in from the south associated with tomorrow’s storm system. Highs should reach the low to mid 40s.
Clouds build tonight as low pressure sweeps southwest to northeast, tracking right over southeast MA by tomorrow.
Lows will dip into the low 30s tonight, and precip will work into the region by midnight or so.
This will produce a period of snow and sleet in the Berkshires, SVT and western hilltowns that may last until dawn, so light accumulations of snow and sleet are possible overnight. Some sleet is also possible in the valley before we change to rain during the day tomorrow.

In fact, warm air will be moving in at all levels, and so we should all change to rain everywhere by mid/late morning, and a half inch to an inch of rain is possible by tomorrow night.
Tuesday night lows dip into the low to mid 20s and a few lake effect snow showers may reach the Berkshires or southern Greens.
Wednesday is cold, sunny and windy with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s, and west wind gusts 30-40mph, which could knock wind chill readings down into the single digits for some! Lows will be in the teens! Very cold for mid November.
Thursday moderates, but is still cold with highs in the low to mid 30s under sunny skies, and lows in the mid to upper 20s as clouds increase and as a coastal storm pushes precip into the region after midnight Friday morning.
This is the best chance we have at a winter storm with accumulating snow and sleet Friday morning before some mix with or change to rain.
This has the potential to be a plowable snowfall for SVT, the Berkshires, and western hilltowns above 1000 or 1500 feet so please stay tuned to this developing storm situation.
Have a great day!
