Western Mass Weather for March 22, 2022 (updated 7:10pm)

ALERT: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES HAVE BEEN HOISTED FOR BERKSHIRE COUNTY, THE WESTERN HILLTOWNS, SOUTHERN VT, NORTHERN LITCHFIELD COUNTY CT AND NORTHERN WORCESTER COUNTY IN CMASS… THIS IS FOR FREEZING RAIN / SLEET POTENTIAL LATE TOMORROW NIGHT INTO EARLY THURSDAY MORNING… A BIT OF A COLDER SETUP IS BEING SIGNALED NOW… ANY ICE TURNS TO RAIN SHOWERS LATER THURSDAY MORNING… COLDER AIR ARRIVES BY EARLY NEXT WEEK… 7:10pm Tuesday…

Good evening everybody, I wanted to pop on here and update you on impacts for Wednesday night late, into early Thursday morning.

Earlier today, it didn’t look like this was going to be a big icing impact, and it still doesn’t look major, but there are enough signals growing that makes icing for folks mainly above 1000 feet more of a likelihood for tomorrow night into Thursday morning.

I’ll go into the details and thinking below, but first let’s look at what we can expect for tonight.

Northwest winds could gust early to 15-25mph, but should slacken after midnight, and this will allow temps to drop into the low to mid 20s, which is quite chilly for later March.

High clouds will continue to move in overnight, and by tomorrow morning we should end up with a partly sunny start, and possibly a sweet sunrise!

Clouds will thicken during the day, and high pressure will continue to press east, but we’ll still have an area of high pressure over Atlantic Canada.

Highs will only reach the mid 40s or so.

As temps fall in the early evening ahead of our rainfall, it will be very dry beforehand (remember that the past two days of had elevated risk spread risk due to low relative humidity).

Given this low relative humidity along with the position of that area of high pressure helping to reinforce a surface level southwest colder drain of air, when our rain finally moves in after 9pm (with a few showers before then), if the rain is heavy and steady enough, it should help to cause evaporative cooling, lowering the surface temps which would then also be reinforced by the cold air damming setup.

This is why the concern has increased for icing overnight in those areas, and why up to tenth of an inch of ice or so could cause very slippery travel, along with some periods of sleet overnight.

Again, this is mostly for 1000 feet and up, as the Pioneer Valley should hang in the mid 30s or so and remain all rain, same for the MassPike corridor from Westfield east to Worcester in southern parts of WMass and CMass.

After icing on Thursday morning, we all should flip to plain rain showers through early afternoon as highs rise into the low 40s, and then the rain might let up a bit with drizzle continuing in spots, before a frontal passage brings another pulse of rain Thursday night with lows in the mid 30s.

Friday is uncertain at the moment, though regardless it looks milder. If we can clear low pressure out of here, we may get more sun by afternoon and a 55-60º day, though for now it looks like mostly cloudy skies might dominate with highs in the low to mid 50s.

The weekend doesn’t look abundantly sunny (mostly cloudy, a few showers each day with an upper level system working through the region).

However, Saturday does look milder in the low 50s vs. Sunday which sits more in the 40s with a cold front coming through to cool us down Sunday night through Tuesday.

For now, no storms look to combine with this late-season cold, which if a storm were to, snow could result!

Have a great night, and remember…

Good morning everybody, winds have calmed down overnight compared to yesterday, but they’ll kick back up again as the surface gets heated by our Sun which will mix the low-level air and send northwesterly gusts up to 25-35mph once again, with some areas east of the I-91 corridor seeing a few 40mph gusts (we did have a number of 40mph max gusts yesterday, as it turned out).

Because the relative humidity is so low, and we haven’t had leaf-out yet to provide more shade, there is an elevated risk of fire spread given dry, old fuels on the ground, so don’t chuck your butts and/or be mindful of any small burns you might be doing with any spring clean-ups.

Having said all that, it’ll be a beautiful day with highs in the mid 40s to low 50s for most, though low 40s may linger for the mountainous regions of SVT and SWNH.

For tonight, we’ll get the coldest night we’ve have had in a bit, as high pressure pushes more completely into New England and slackens the pressure gradient and hence the wind gusts.

Lows will drop into the mid to upper 20s under mostly clear skies, which sets us up for our transition day tomorrow.

————————
A warm front will begin to press toward New England on Wednesday, and as such more clouds will start to work into the region, producing a partly sunny day on average with highs in the mid to upper 40s with a light wind.

Clouds will thicken by afternoon, and a few showers may make it in here by late afternoon or early evening.

Temps will be dropping into the low to mid 30s overnight, and so some of us will see a mix with snow, sleet or freezing rain for a time, while others remain plain rain.

A few icy spots could develop, and so I will update you as we get closer, but a bigger impact to travel is not expected, only potential isolated issues.

Any icing turns to plain rain by mid-morning on Thursday, as a secondary low pressure system forms near the coast and should help produce a soaking Thursday in the greater WMass region with some folks getting over an inch of rain, maybe as high as 1.5″ of water.

#GaloshesTime

Showers should continue Thursday night with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s, and they could last into Friday morning, with drying by afternoon.

Friday afternoon highs look milder in the low to mid 50s with mostly cloudy skies, and lows in the upper 30s as the cloud deck breaks up a bit.

However, all weekend we should be under the influence of an upper trough that will rotate weaker disturbances through our region creating periods of scattered showers mixed with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the 40s to low 50s Saturday, followed by cooling temps Sunday into Monday.

In fact, some folks won’t break out of the 30s on Monday, but it looks to be drying as the upper level system waves longingly, says goodbye, and departs east for the dark green pastures of the northern Atlantic Ocean.

Have a great day, and remember…
