Western Mass Weather for March 13, 2019

SUPER DRY AIR KEEPS US GENERALLY DRY SOUTH OF THE MA/VT-NH BORDER TONIGHT… SOME RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS POSSIBLE NORTHERN HALVES OF BENNINGTON, WINDHAM AND CHESHIRE COUNTIES IN S.VT AND SW.NH TONIGHT, CAN’T RULE OUT A STRAY COATING… OTHERWISE, MILDER TOMORROW, AND EVEN MILDER WITH SHOWERS AND A FEW DOWNPOURS FRIDAY BEFORE WE COOL DOWN THIS WEEKEND… A COUPLE OF MINOR WINTRY CHANCES MONDAY MORNING AND MID WEEK, BUT THEY’RE LOOKING WEAK RIGHT NOW… (5:40pm Wednesday)

Good evening everybody, I hope you all had a great day, it’s been nice enough, and tonight we’ll be dealing more clouds building in as a disturbance passes to our north.

If you look at radar, it’s pretty lit up over our region. However, it’s mostly dry at the surface, why is that?

It’s because have air temps in the upper 30s to mid 40s, whereas dewpoint temps are in the upper single digits to upper teens!!! That means very dry air is in place at the surface, and “dewpoint depressions” (i.e. the difference between the air temp and dewpoint temp) are anywhere from 15-30+ degrees.

Any dewpoint depressions over 10 to 12 degrees tends to mean precip will evaporate before it reaches the ground, which is what is transpiring over our heads currently.

SUMMARY
–For tonight, a shortwave passes to our north and provides rain and snow showers for the aforementioned regions in my headline
–We can’t rule out some rain or snow showers south of the border into northwestern and north-central MA, but shouldn’t amount to much, if anything
–Lows tonight drop into the mid 20s or so with mostly cloudy skies
–For tomorrow, a warm front advances into the region resulting in partly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 50s
–Clouds will increase Thursday night with lows either side of 40 degrees
–Patchy fog will be possible, and showers will move in later, out ahead of a powerful low pressure system currently bringing a blizzard to the Plains
–This storm passes WAY northwest of us, which will vigorously draw warmer moist air from the Deep South and hurl it into New England
–By Friday, expect showers at any time during the day, but the most concentrated areas of rain will be in the morning, and again in the late afternoon and evening with a cold frontal passage
–Downpours will be possible, but not all day long. Gusty winds may accompany any downpours, and we can’t rule out a thunderstorm Friday evening with the cold frontal passage
–Highs will be in the 50s to near 60 degrees, and if we can get any sunny breaks during that expected middle-of-the-day lull, we could jump briefly into the low 60s or even mid 60s!
–Cold front passes Friday night, but cold air lags the front, so lows will only be in the mid to upper 30s
–Saturday and Sunday looks mostly sunny, with Saturday being the pick of the weekend given the slightly milder temps
–Highs Saturday will be in the low to mid 40s and lows in the 20s, while Sunday highs are in the mid 30s to low 40s with lows near 20 degrees
–There is a very low risk of some light snow or snow showers Monday morning with a weak system zipping through, and again next Wednesday or Thursday
–Any coastal development with a larger storm is likely shunted off to our south, passing well out to sea

Have a great night!
