Western Mass Weather for June 23, 2020

[SLOWED-DOWN, DRY-BUT-HUMID, VERY-WARM-TO-HOT, LOGY SUMMER PATTERN CONTINUES INTO NEXT WEEK… NOT MUCH RAIN CHANCE, WHICH MEANS WE CONTINUE TO HEAD INTO DEEPER DROUGHT CONDITIONS, PLAN ACCORDINGLY… BEST CHANCE FOR WIDER-SPREAD RAIN SHOWERS ARRIVES TOMORROW AFTERNOON, BUT EVEN THAT ISN’T LOOKING VERY HELPFUL… IN OTHER NEWS, I HAVE DECIDED TO LIVE IN MY MANGO/STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE #SELFCAREACTIVITIES… 7:20AM TUES]

Good morning everybody, we start off mild with temps in the 60s, dewpoints in the 60s, and patchy fog in spots, notably in Orange up into southwest NH, but other areas across the region as well.

For today, our broken record weather continues… hot and humid conditions prevail with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, mostly sunny skies after fog burns off, and afternoon isolated showers and thunderstorms.

Most of the activity should be focused across portions of the WMass region along and west of the I-91 corridor.

Any showers or storms will pulse up, and drift slowly south to north after formation, and then dissipate as they rain themselves out of commission, making way for nascent (and likely proximate) convection operations to commence.

I do hope you get one in your neck of the woods today!

For tonight, any showers and storms quit, and leave us with a partly cloudy night with lows in the upper 60s, humid conditions, and patchy fog again late.

For Wednesday, a storm will be lifting northeast through the Great Lakes and headed towards Hudson Bay, Canada. This will spur on a surface shortwave to pass to our northwest, dragging a cold front through the region.

This SHOULD induce and focus a line of showers and thunderstorms to cross the WMass region tomorrow afternoon/evening, which will lead to a more partly sunny day. Some storms may be on the strong side with gusty winds and small hail.

Highs will reach the low to mid 80s, with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s as somewhat drier, but still fairly humid air advects into the region.

By Thursday, a cold pool of air will float overhead in the mid levels, which will be conducive to producing scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, given the stronger thermal lapse rates.

Highs will reach the upper 70s to mid 80s under mostly sunny skies, with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Dewpoints will reach the low to mid 60s, so humid, yes, but not super horrible, and (I would argue) tolerable.

For Friday, we get a dry day, with mostly sunny skies, and highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s with lows near 60 degrees.

The weekend through Monday looks to be in the low to mid 80s for highs, under partly to mostly sunny skies, with the chance for isolated afternoon showers or a thunderstorm each day.

Our persistent summer pattern remains in place for the time being. I get that people are frustrated with the dearth of rain, but you’ll have to supplement with irrigation and keep spigots open for now.

With that, I’m off to shapeshift into a frozen strawberry and be tossed into my morning smoothie, at least I’ll get to cool down for a while… have a good day!
