Western Mass Weather for July 28, 2021

A MUCH CALMER DAY AHEAD WITH A FEW ISOLATED SHOWERS POSSIBLE LATE IN THE DAY, OTHERWISE DRYING… TOMORROW AFTERNOON, AND ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT WE COULD SEE MORE SEVERE WEATHER, AND WE CAN’T RULE OUT A TORNADO, ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTHERN TACONICS OR NORTHWEST CT… ONCE WE GET PAST THAT EVENT, WE ARE LOOKING AT A VERY NICE FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY PERIOD, AND THAT MAY EXTEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK… PRECIPITATION CONTINUES TO TREND TOWARDS LOWER AMOUNTS, WHICH IS NEEDED RIGHT NOW… 6:55AM WED…

Good morning everybody, that was quite the wind-packed squall line yesterday! When the wind shear is strong and present, it can overcome other parameters that are sub-optimal for severe weather, and produce the kind of gusts we saw yesterday, which weren’t *insane*, but certainly strong enough to produce outages with downed trees and power lines.

We have about 200 households total across all of WMass and CMass still without power this morning, so that restoration effort should be wrapping up shortly.

Thanks for all the pics, vids and reports yesterday, and thankfully for us, we have a WAY nicer day queued up for our Wednesday – schwing!

SUMMARY
–Morning clouds will give way to a partly sunny day as high pressure to our west tracks eastward into New England
–Highs will reach the low to upper 70s behind the cold front that brought our severe weather yesterday
–Dewpoints will lower into the 50s to near 60º, so muggy conditions will be vanquished for a bit
–We can’t rule out a few late afternoon or early evening showers but no big whoop
–Lows will drop into the upper 50s with patchy fog possible late
–For Thursday, we will start off with some sunny breaks, but clouds will increase as the day wears on
–A persistent upper level trough (i.e. a large mid/upper level region with lower than average pressure) positioned over southeast Canada will foster a low pressure area that tracks to our north and pulls yesterday’s cold front back towards our region as a warm front
–How far this warm front progresses into southern New England will determine the materialization or lack thereof for a potential severe weather event tomorrow night, which nobody wants
–The reason why nobody wants it is that if we get into the true warm sector and the “triple point” (the point where the cold, warm, and occluded fronts meet) passes over us, we may have to deal with an isolated tornado threat – at night #NoThanks
–Highs on Thursday reach the low to upper 70s and scattered showers are expected by afternoon with perhaps a sub-severe t-storm
–By the evening and night, we watch the warm front, and may be dealing with strong to severe thunderstorms overnight, so I will keep you updated on that
–The best chance for such weather conditions would be further to our southwest, maybe reaching the southern Taconics and adjacent Litchfield County CT, but it may push further northeast into WMass
–Lows Thursday night will be in the low to mid 60s, and we could see up to an additional inch of rainfall by Friday morning
–On Friday, any morning showers or clouds gives way to a mostly sunny day with highs well into the 70s to near 80º as our warm front collapses back south of us, and allows super crisp and cool air from Canada to drop our lows into the upper 40s to low 50s overnight under clear skies
–Saturday looks awesome, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 70s and lows in the low to mid 50s with lowered humidity
–Sunday will see another disturbance track into the region with showers in the afternoon and overnight with highs also in the 70s and lows in the 50s with a few showers
–Early next week looks like we get into the clear again with more sunshine and seasonable highs

Have a great day!
