Western Mass Weather for January 3, 2019

LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW ALONG AND NORTH OF RT. 2 IN SVT, WMASS AND CMASS THIS MORNING… MORE SPOTTY OR EVEN NON-EXISTENT SOUTH OF THERE, EXCEPT FOR ONE FINAL SWIPE OF SNOW AND MIXED RAIN/SNOW SOUTH OF ROUTE 2 BETWEEN 7-10AM… SHOWERY SATURDAY… PLOWABLE SNOWSTORM POSSIBLE NEXT TUES…
(6:15am Thurs)

Good morning everybody, as referenced last evening and late last night, steady light and at times moderate snow has been confined to mainly SVT, SWNH, and portions of WMass and Worcester County along and (mainly) north of Rt. 2.

Do you have any accumulation? Please let me know your current conditions and how much snow you have on the ground, if any.

Most of us have no snow at all. To be honest, aside from one final batch of snow (which may mix with rain along and south of the Pike down into NCT) between 7-10am, that’ll do it for much of WMass.

Some quick coatings are possible, but generally that about does it for accumulation south of the Rt. 2 corridor in WMass, CMass and NCT, and a coating to 2″ (with a few spot higher amounts in the highest terrain) should do it for north of the Rt. 2 corridor in WMass, CMass, and up into SVT and SWNH.

Also, some spotty freezing drizzle is possible in some areas, which could cause slippery travel.

Otherwise, sunshine breaks out by noon as our Clipper low departs to the east, with highs reaching into the upper 30s to low 40s with lows in the 20s.

Friday is sunny with highs in the low to mid 40s and lows in the mid to upper 20s with increasing clouds.

By the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning, our next storm system will be racing northeast out of the lower Ohio Valley. This will be pushing into a milder regime over New England, so it should be mostly a rain event.

However, the timing of its onset is such that it should be below freezing north of the MassPike very early Saturday morning, which could cause a period of very brief snow changing to freezing rain, which may cause slippery travel for some Saturday morning.

We should then transition to plain scattered rain showers during Saturday with highs 35-40 degrees, and lows in the low 30s, with black ice possible.

Sunday will see a cold front whip through the region with highs in the low 30s and northwest wind gusts 20-30mph Sunday and Sunday night, when lows will drop into the upper teens to low 20s as colder air settles in advance of our next storm system for Tuesday.

Monday starts off sunny but clouds up in the afternoon, and snow showers are possible by Monday night.

Tuesday into Tuesday night looks rather snowy at the moment, and the plows may have to come out for this one, as a moderate snow fall (3-6″ or 4-8″) is not out of the question, though it’s far too early to ascribe much if any confidence to those numbers. It’s more an idea of potential that I want to convey.

Ok! Have a great day and safe travels for those who encounter slick spots, especially along and north of Rt. 2.
