Good morning everybody, so far the 2-4″ valley 3-6″ high terrain totals seemed to verify mostly, but some folks definitely got the higher end of that range, and some did a bit over, so a nice, moderate snowfall for many of us.
We still have snow showers in the area this morning, generally light, but some moderate bursts out over the Berkshires and hilly areas.
Temps are in the 20s this morning, and highs should rise into the low to mid 30s with fairly light winds.
Watch out for black ice or slick road ways due to additional light snowfall overnight and freezing fog present in spots this morning. Some light icing may have occurred as well.
An additional coating to 1″ from low terrain to high terrain is possible through this evening, maybe a touch more in the southern Greens in VT.
Our old low center is pressing east through the region currently, and after it gets east of us, any lingering light snow showers across the region should relegate themselves to the favored upslope areas of the Berkshires, Taconics, northern Litchfields, southern Greens, western hills, etc this afternoon.
For tonight, lows will drop into the upper teens to low 20s as any mountain snow showers quit.
For Thursday, skies will on average be partly sunny and highs will reach the 20s early on. However, a strong Arctic front will pass through during the afternoon, which may be accompanied by isolated snow squalls.
Once the front passes, northwest winds are going to gust 25-35mph and temps are going to drop like a cold, icy rock through the teens by evening, and then to either side of 0º by Friday morning. Wind chill readings will drop to 15-20 below zero for some.
On Friday, WMass is Hoth (Google it, if you don’t know the name), though at least it’ll be sunny from Friday through Sunday.
Highs will be in the single digits in the Berkshires and surrounding high terrain, and in the mid teens for the Pioneer Valley. I doubt anybody is seeing 20º on Friday. Winds will continue to gust 25-35mph, producing wind chills in the single digits below zero, during the day.
At night? Way worse. Lows will again drop into the single digits below zero with fresh snow pack, to maybe 0º in the valley. When you add in winds continuing to gust 25-35mph, we will see wind chills 15-25 below zero by Saturday morning.
Assuming these numbers continue to be signaled, Wind Chill Advisories will be hoisted by the NWS in time.
On Saturday, winds will start to relent as high pressure builds into the region. Highs will be in the teens to low 20s with lows in the low to mid single digits.
On Sunday, we start to moderate our temperatures, as the lobe of the Polar Vortex responsible for freezing our tushes off lifts northeast and back up into southeast Canada.
It will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 20s with lows in the teens and clouds increasing.
Early next week still holds the potential for a substantial winter storm, but it could also pass out to sea to our south, or graze the region south of the MassPike, so stay tuned for updates.
Later next week our temps look to moderate as advertised several days ago, and we could see rain or mix event late next week.
Stay tuned for updates, thanks for all the reports yesterday, and have a great day!
