Western Mass Weather for January 27, 2019

ACCUMULATING SNOW EXPECTED TUESDAY NIGHT INTO THE FIRST HALF OF WEDNESDAY… PLOWABLE AMOUNTS ARE POSSIBLE IN SOME AREAS ESPECIALLY NORTH OF RT. 9 AND WEST OF I-91 IN WMASS UP INTO NH AND VT… SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON MAY COAT THE GROUND IN THE BERKSHIRES, AND A SQUALL IS POSSIBLE… ARCTIC AIR ARRIVES BY THURSDAY… (10am Sunday)

Good morning everybody, I’m late, so into the details I jump *splash*:

SUMMARY
–Surface low pressure swings around the southeastern base of a large upper level Arctic trough positioned over southeast Ontario and western Quebec provinces
–A cold front draped off of this low will be swung eastward through New England by tonight
–Ahead of this feature will be two lines of precipitation and lift
–By late morning into early afternoon, the first cluster will bring scattered snow showers through the region and some may be briefly heavy
–As this happens, a southerly slow develops and raises temps into the low to mid 30s
–Expect some coatings in the Berkshires, but snow showers may mix with rain further east into the valley, and also dry up and weaken due to downsloping (i.e. air flows off mountains and down into valleys, creating subsidence, or sinking air, which is a drying air motion)
–After all, the valley IS the Western Mass Snow Lover’s Triangle of Disappointment! That produces an elegant and roll-off-the-tongue acronym of WMSLTOD
–By dinner time, a final thin line of snow showers will traipse across the region from west to east, and then we’ll become partly cloudy behind the cold front with lows in the teens
–Monday is a high pressure fair weather all around swell kinda day… gee willikers!! God, I’m old.
–Highs tomorrow under abundant sunshine will be in the upper 20s, give or take, with lows in the low teens
–Tuesday looks cloudy in advance of our storm system with highs in the low to mid 30s
–Another northern stream disturbance rounds the southerly base of our Arctic trough and races northeast to pass to our northwest
–However, it appears that a secondary low pressure system will develop along the frontal boundary of the parent storm, and pass to our south
–If this happens, it will keep the cold air tucked into the region, and many of us north of the Pike should see all snow
–Initially, a light snow shield should develop later Tuesday afternoon into the evening, with more moderate to at times heavy snow at night and into Wednesday morning
–As I said, this could be a plowable snow for some, and if it all comes together, it still holds the potential to be a 3-6″ to 4″-8″ type storm that would impact the Wednesday morning commute, so stay tuned
–Arctic air seeps into the region by Thursday with highs only near 10 degrees and lows below zero!
–Then it modifies but still very cold Friday and Saturday

Have a great day and I will keep you updated on the Tuesday/Wednesday winter storm!
