Western Mass Weather for February 9, 2019

TUESDAY EVENING COMMUTE LIKELY TO BE IMPACTED WITH SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN AFTER LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW ACCUMULATION TUESDAY LATER MORNING INTO THE MID AFTERNOON OR SO… (7:10PM Saturday)

Good evening everybody, to provide the rundown through sunrise on Tuesday, allow me to pontificate, expand, blather, incessantly finger tap, and otherwise sling a string of alphabetical detritus across your favored screen of choice:

TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING:
–Any westerly wind gusts to 20mph take a chill pill by tomorrow morning
–Lows tonight will drop into the single digits. Be grateful for the shelter you find yourself in
–Calm and cold Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 20s
–Clouds increase Sunday night with lows in the teens and some flurries or snow showers possible late, no accumulation expected
–Monday looks mostly sunny with more high pressure dominance, with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s, and lows in the single digits

SNOW TO ICE, ONCE AGAIN
–I am officially sick of this pattern. For all the signals of an El Nino Modoki late in the Fall, this is very La Nina-type pattern, colder northwest, milder east
–We just can’t seem to get the large-scale flow to dig storm tracks deeper south. They cut west of us, or over us
–This coming storm will feature a mix of both, as parent low pressure moves northeast into NY, while a secondary low forms south of us
–With high pressure to our northeast and SOME low pressure development to our south, we should see snow move into the region by late Tuesday morning, say 10am or 11am
–Snow will continue during the early to mid afternoon before the mid level low pressure system starts to draw milder air aloft
–This should change snow over to sleet and/or freezing rain Tuesday evening, and make for a mess of a commute
–It may remain all snow in SVT/SWNH, but icing is likely to mix in there, too
–The whole things quits sometime on Wednesday, exactly when, I do not know, but it could change back to snow briefly before ending
–Some plowable snow amounts (3+”) are expected before icing changeovers occur on Tuesday
–Thursday is a fair, seasonable, sunny day with highs in the 30s before an even milder storm for late week

That about does it for now, folks, hope you have a good night, stay warm, sleep well, and all that good stuff…

WIND ADVISORIES CONTINUE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON FOR WEST WINDS GUSTING 40-50MPH AT TIMES… COLD AND FAIR TODAY THROUGH MONDAY… ANTICIPATED SNOW THUMP ON TUESDAY TRANSITIONS TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WITH WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES LIKELY IN WMASS… SNOW/ICE QUITS WEDNESDAY MORNING, QUIET THURSDAY, THEN MORE MIXED STORMINESS LATE WEEK INTO THE NEXT WEEKEND… (6:50am Sat)

Good morning everybody, well that was a noisy night of wind-whipped disjointed sleep. Wacky dreams to be sure.

Here’s a video of me and my increasingly less positive attitude every time I tried to set sail back into sleepy land:

SUMMARY
–West winds continue today as high pressure approaches
–Winds will gust 40-50mph at times, and highs will likely remain in the 20s under sunny skies
–Winds slacken this evening as high pressure moves closer, and with clear skies, dry air, and more calm conditions, lows will slip into the single digits
–Sunday and Monday will also feature mostly sunny skies with high pressure dominance and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s and lows in the low to mid teens Sunday night, and single digits Monday night
–A double barrel low pressure complex will push northeast into the region
–The parent low, at this time, looks to be the stronger of the two, which means we will change from snow to ice, and possibly rain into parts of eastern CT
–The secondary low looks to strengthen too late to keep the cold in place at all levels of the atmosphere to provide a full-on snowstorm
–Still, with very cold air in place the night before this event begins, we should get a good thump of front-end snow, which may bring the plows out for many before the ice treatments get laid down
–Onset of precipitation for now looks to be before noon, and the storm would end Wednesday morning
–I will dial in the onset and departure precip times, as well as types as we get closer
–For now, it still looks like a 2-4″, or 3-6″ type snowfall changing to ice
–SVT will get the snowy jackpot once again from this system, possibly remaining all snow and sleet
–Wednesday night into Thursday is fair and seasonably cold
–Two more low pressure systems approach for late Friday and again by the end of the weekend
–For now, these could also be mixed precip events, but I will keep an eye on it and keep you updated

Have a great day, peeps! Yoiks, and away!!!!
