Western Mass Weather for February 5, 2022

WATCH FOR BLACK ICE PATCHES ON SECONDARY AND TERTIARY ROADS THIS MORNING… OTHERWISE, CLOUDS DECREASE AND SUNSHINE BUILDS WITH BREEZY NORTHWEST WINDS WHICH SLACKEN LATE, PRECEDING A VERY COLD NIGHT AHEAD… SUNDAY IS MOSTLY SUNNY, BUT CLOUDS BUILD LATE… A COASTAL STORM MAY GRAZE THE WMASS REGION WITH A LIGHT SNOWFALL MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY… MILDER AND PARTLY SUNNY SKIES FOLLOW MID TO LATE WEEK… 7:30am Sat

Good morning everybody, our messy storm system has cleared the east, but did pull through a few light snow showers after midnight in its wake, which may have dusted a few areas.

The main story is that it’s cold out there, with temps in the teens mostly, with some single digits in northwest MA and southern VT, and some low 20s in the lower valley into northern CT.

Any morning clouds will dissipate as high pressure starts to nudge in from the west, and sunshine should rule by afternoon with highs in the upper teens to low 20s. Northwest winds will also gust over 20mph at times, so it’ll be a bit blustery at times.

For tonight, high pressure moves in overhead, and wind will become light/calm, and skies will clear. With very dry air in place, radiational cooling will be maximized, and lows will plummet into the single digits below and above zero. At least the wind won’t be a factor!

For Sunday, a Sunny Day arrives with high pressure on top of us (see attached surface pressure chart) and highs will reach the low to mid 20s with light wind, though we’ll get some clouds to develop late in the day, and possibly more in the evening after sunset. Lows will drop into the teens.

For Monday, a mostly cloudy day is now expected. High pressure will be pushing east and as such will cause a southwesterly flow behind it, which will flow into New England.

This will raise our high temps into the mid 30s or so as a storm that was slated to pass out to sea potentially may track a bit closer to New England.

While this doesn’t look to be a sizable storm or a slow-moving storm, it could provide some light snow accumulations Monday night into Tuesday morning as lows bottom out into the 20s. Temps will be marginal to our east and south so rain may mix in over central MA or northeast CT, should this trend continue.

After a few snow showers Tuesday morning, we will climb again well into the 30s with partly sunny skies developing. At night, lows will drop into the upper teens to low 20s.

The broad brush picture for the mid to late week period is for highs to reach into the upper 30s to low 40s with partly sunny skies on average, with a cool down expected by Friday night or Saturday.

Have a great day!
