Good morning everybody, we’re starting off cold! Temps are mostly in the teens out there with some low 20s south and east in the Hartford, Springfield, Worcester metro regions.

Our storm system is out over Michigan and tracking east-northeast. It will spawn a secondary storm in the Gulf of Maine later today and tonight, and will be responsible for our snowy weather today.

While some snow or rain showers are possible later this morning, the main precipitation shield arrives around noon to early afternoon from west to east.

Between a nearby upper level jet stream, and a lower level jet streak, and moist air between forced rise up and over a dry cold dome of surface air over the WMass region this morning, we should get a nice little burst of snowfall this afternoon, and it may snow .5″ to 1″ per hour at times, so briefly heavy snowfall rates are expected in spots.

Otherwise, it should be light to moderate snowfall overall, but those heavy bursts will reduce visibilities and could slicken up some high-terrain roads in northwest MA and SVT, with mainly wet roads in the valley expected.

Given that temps will be warming up into the low to mid 30s for highs, and with colder air aloft, southerly wind gusts will blow 25-40mph earlier in the afternoon, and should slacken with time, so there could be a period of windy and snowy conditions that combine to produce visibility issues, especially early to mid afternoon.

Speaking of warming, you will see the first map I attached shows a predicted precipitation shield by precip type (blue means snow, green means rain).

While we all could mix with rain briefly before flipping to snow by noon/early afternoon, areas from Springfield and points east and south should mix with rain by late afternoon, and possibly change to all rain as the surface warms before the storm quits between 6-8pm tonight, from west to east.

As for snowfall amounts, Springfield south and east should see a coating to maybe an inch before mix/change to rain. North and west of there we should generally see 1-3″ and that not only includes northwest CT, much of WMass, SVT, but also northwestern Worcester County into southwest NH.

I do also think there will be a couple swaths of 2-5″ that will be localized, and most likely form over the southern Greens in VT, westernmost Franklin County and the northeastern Berkshires, and possibly also in the highest terrain areas of northern Litchfield County, with a few 3″+ areas in the southeastern Berkshires and westernmost Hampden County.

REST OF THE WEEK
–Lows tonight drop into the mid to upper 20s with linger snow showers possible in the Berkshires or southern Greens from upslope effect
–Tuesday is mostly cloudy with highs in the 35-40º range with some snow and rain showers again in the afternoon as another distrubance whips by to our north
–Lows will dip into the upper 20s to low 30s (remember, that was our high temp range for yesterday!)
–Wednesday is mild, high pressure builds in, and highs reach the low to mid 40s with partly sunny skies
–A cold front moves through Wednesday night with a rain or snow shower, with lows near 30º
–Thursday and Friday looks seasonably cold with plenty of sunshine and breezy, highs in the mid to upper 30s Thursday with lows in the teens, and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s Friday with lows also in the teens
–Mixed rain and snow showers arrive by Saturday as another surge of southerly flow works back into the region, with highs back into the 40s by Sunday

Have a great day!
