DISCUSSION:
Good morning everybody, we’ve got a bunch of substantial weather changes on the way today, as we seesaw into mid-February.

While you can never count out winter in the WMass region until early May, the recent pattern change has been a gut punch to the Winter of 2021/2022, make no mistake, and these mild air intrusions look to continue into at least into early March.

For today, morning showers associated with our wind shift boundary (which is approaching the Berkshires at 8am) are affecting mainly the northern Berkshires into southern VT, and will dissipate as the morning wears on.

Temps already in the 30s and 40s will soar higher well into the 40s for our northern and western zones, and well into the 50s to near 60º in our valley, southern and eastern zones of the greater WMass region (See Zones 1, 2 and 3 above in the “Daily Terrestrial” section for I mean by the greater WMass region).

Mostly cloudy skies will remain in SVT, SWNH and the Berkshires and Taconics, with partly sunny skies in the Pioneer Valley east and south.

Southerly breezes will shift from south and then gust out of the west this afternoon and evening from 20-30mph.

Temps will then drop precipitously tonight behind our second frontal boundary which has an Arctic air mass behind it, crashing our lows into the teens and 20s.

SUNDAY
For tomorrow, a SW to NE oriented mid-level trough will help develop a surface low along the cold frontal boundary to our south that passes through tonight, which will help create a period of light snow for parts of southern New England tomorrow.

I’m afraid that yet again the Pioneer Valley will be in the snow hole portion of this snow shield.

While some scattered coatings are possible in WMass, some of us will just see scattered light snow showers in the morning, with the best chance for a coating to an inch of snow in northern CT, the southern Berkshires, southwest hilltowns (western Hampden) and into southern Worcester County, with 1-3″ in southern CT, RI and southeast MA.

Highs tomorrow will reach the mid to upper 20s with lows in the single digits to low teens as we dry out.

For Monday and Tuesday, it’s cold and sunny with highs in the teens to low 20s Monday and lows in the single digits, to highs in the 20s to low 30s for Tuesday with lows in the teens.

Wednesday through Friday will feature a much milder period as southwest flow is re-established in the region, with highs in the 40s on Wednesday under partly sunny skies.

Thursday highs will reach the 50s with rain moving into the region by afternoon, lasting overnight into early Friday as a storm passes well north of us, keeping us on the mild side of the storm.

Next weekend looks cooler, but I’ll refine that for you as we get closer.
