Good morning everybody, some of us got a nice blanket of white overnight! I have about 2″ in Deerfield, though that includes the less than half an inch coating that was laid down yesterday, and it’s still snowing light to moderately.
Some roads are slippery out there, so give yourself time to get from point A to point B this morning.
We’ve already flipped to rain in the Springfield metro area and points south. Southwest winds, as you’ve no doubt noticed, have been kicking up as the low approaches from the west and that is driving milder air northerly into the region, changing us over from snow to rain. Some wind gusts have topped 30mph in the Berkshires.
Rain will continue to mix in northward up the valley into Northampton (if it hasn’t already) as the morning wears on, and likely north of there with time.
How much snow do you have where you live and what are you seeing currently in your town?
We should end up with 1-3″ in all of Franklin County and much of Worcester County, with 2-4″ in the hilltowns either side of the CT River in Franklin County, as well as the western hilltowns of Hampshire and Hampden Counties, the Berkshires, Litchfields and up into SVT and SWNH. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of more 3-6″ amounts in SVT/SWNH, so if you live up in the high terrain, please furnish your morning report! Thanks!
Any snow and rain ends by around noon, and we will get a lull in the action under mostly cloudy skies with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. A few patches of fog are possible.
By this evening, a frontal boundary to our south will focus some shower activity over us which may reach as far north as the Rt. 9 corridor in WMass/CMass, maybe a touch north with a few scattered showers.
Overnight, our temps will settle down into the upper 20s to low 30s as that front starts to jog north as a warm front. A wave of low pressure will form along it, and track into southern New England for Tuesday.
This is likely to bring more snow, ice and rain to the WMass region before or around dawn Tuesday morning, which will change to rain late Tuesday morning. Still, some slippery travel is possible in the normal high terrain culprit areas. I will refine this in this evening’s report, so stay tuned for that as I try to dial things in with more granularity.
As Tuesday wears on, we’ll see any rain end by afternoon sometime. Highs will have reached the upper 30s. Lows Tuesday night will be in the mid to upper 20s with partly to mostly cloudy skies and calm winds.
Wednesday continues to be the pick of the week as high pressure presses in from the northwest and produces mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid to upper 30s.
Clouds will build again in this active, zonal pattern with waves off of the Pacific Ocean tracking west to east across the country and landing in New England.
As an aside, you need more meridional (i.e. south to north) jet stream flow to develop both strong coastal storms that simultaneously pull in colder air straight south out of Canada and into New England, and that just isn’t the pattern this year.
Snow and ice arrives late Wednesday night into Thursday, and will likely again change to rain, unless that storm can be suppressed a bit further south. We shall see.
Thursday looks to become mild again with highs near 40, but by Thursday night into Friday, strong northwest winds will rip in much colder air with lows in the teens Thursday night, wind chills near 0 degrees, and highs only in the teens to near 20 on Friday!!
Cold air continues on Saturday before a mildening Sunday. Fair weather dominates through the Friday to Sunday period, with some mixed showers possible Sunday night into Monday.
Have a great day, and please send along your reports and pics, thank you!
