ANOTHER MIXED BAG PERIOD OF WEATHER ON THE WAY WITH CALMNESS TODAY, FREEZING RAIN, SNOW AND RAIN EARLY TOMORROW MORNING… SHOWERS AND GUSTY WINDS MONDAY AFTERNOON, TURNING TO SNOW IN THE BERKSHIRES/WESTERN HILLS AS IT ENDS AT NIGHT… COLD ON TUESDAY, AND POTENTIAL FOR SNOW ON WEDNESDAY INTO EARLY THURSDAY… 7:55am Sunday…
Good morning everybody, we’ve got a “dirty high” pressure system pressing east through the region today, so-called dirty because there is some upper level moisture that will produce periods of clouds mixed with some sunshine, with best chance of sun over valley locations.
Highs will reach the upper 30s to low 40s, but may just sit in the mid 30s north of the Rt. 2 corridor up in southern VT and points east.
Our high moves east of us tonight and flow will shift out of the south and southwest as a warm front lifts northeast towards the region, draped off of its low center that will be strengthening and tracking into the Great Lakes region.
Lows tonight will sit down to near freezing and rise by morning.
However, as the warm front pushes some moisture into the WMass region, we could see a mixed bag of precipitation in the form of light snow, freezing rain, and rain showers, which may cause a few slippery spots early tomorrow morning before the surface warms to change it all to scattered rain showers.
We may also see some wind gusts out of the south and southeast kick up in the high terrain west of the I-91 corridor so don’t be surprised if gets breezy out that way tomorrow morning.
Showers should decrease by late morning or early afternoon as we enter the warm sector by afternoon.
We’ll have to see how warm our surface temperatures get. Basically, the warmer we get, the more chance we will have to get mix down some stronger southerly winds, though it now looks like we’ll not get into the 60s to accomplish that atmospheric task.
Highs look to only reach the mid 50s or so, with southerly wind gusts blowing up to 25-35mph. I will be watching this and updating you on wind potential tomorrow afternoon to see if it looks more robust than that.
As we approach and pass sunset, the cold front will be moving into the region, and will bring heavier showers through.
These rain showers could change to snow in the Berkshires, Taconics and western hilltowns up into SVT after sunset and before midnight with some fresh coatings.
Lows will drop into the upper 20s and winds will veer around to the west and gust 30-40mph as cold air gets pulled through the region.
Tuesday is the calm before the potential storm with highs in the 30s under partly sunny skies, with lows in the low to mid 20s: an excellent surface prep for accumulating snow, IF the storm tracks far enough north to produce it.
On Wednesday, the big question is how far north the storm will track. It has always looked like a flat tracking, progressive system, and where it leaves the eastern U.S. coastline, because it won’t be hooking north.
It’s hard to see some in our region, either northern CT or WMass/CMass doesn’t see at least a few inches of snow, but uncertainty remains on the track, and so we have to see how tomorrow’s system impacts the atmosphere to get a better read on Wednesday’s system.
It does look seasonably cold on Thursday as we dry out and clear up, with some milder temps on Friday and more rain showers heading into next weekend.
Have a great day!
