Western Mass Weather for December 24, 2018

PERIODS OF LIGHT SNOW THIS MORNING AND AFTERNOON WILL GENERALLY LAY COATINGS DOWN, AND UP TO AN INCH OR TWO IN THE WESTERN HILLTOWNS, BERKSHIRES, SVT, TACONICS AND LITCHFIELDS… WE DRY TONIGHT, AND CHRISTMAS DAY LOOKS DRY, SUNNY AND COLD… FAIR WEATHER CONTINUES THROUGH THURSDAY, THEN WE SEE SNOW/ICE CHANGING TO RAIN FRIDAY… (6:25am Monday)

Good morning everybody, we’ve already had some very light snow during these pre-dawn Monday morning hours, and a few dustings have been laid down.

–Light snow is a result of two shortwaves moving through today
–The weaker one is passing through now
–A slightly more robust one moves through this afternoon
–This means we can expect periods of light snow, with a little enhancement in the high terrain
–Not everyone will see a coating, but coatings are more likely than not
–Up to 1″ or maybe 2″ is possible in the aforementioned high terrain areas. We could see an inch in the Worcester hills as well, and higher terrain of southwest NH
–Highs today will be in the low to mid 30s, and lows in the 20s as we dry and clear out for Christmas Eve
–Christmas Day and the following two days through Thursday feature mostly sunny skies, highs in the low to mid 30s and lows in the upper teens to mid 20s
–We cloud up Thursday night as low pressure ejects out of the center of the country and heads northeast
–With dewpoint temps in the teens Thursday into Thursday night, and lows in the mid to upper 20s, I am concerned for initial onset snow and sleet during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning
–This could have implications for the Friday morning commute, so stay tuned
–Evaporative cooling could bring temps colder to start Friday, before a southerly flow thanks to the low passing west, and high pressure to our southeast changes us all to rain
–The high elevations could see prolonged icing, especially in the form of freezing rain before any changeover
–Highs Friday and Saturday should reach the 40s before a cold front moves through Saturday evening and drops us into the 30s for Sunday
–This coming weekend looks fabulous, with mostly sunny skies and cooling as the weekend progresses
–I am still watching the potential for snow for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day as we stay colder
–January is looking colder and snowier still, so stay with me this Winter as it looks to be active

Have a great day, and be patient with all the last-minute kookery out there!

Enjoy the mood snow, and watch for a few slippery spots in the high terrain should a couple of inches pile up….
