Western Mass Weather for December 20, 2020

[LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS BY EARLY AFTERNOON WITH MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES TODAY… SOME COATINGS POSSIBLE… MAYBE AN INCH IN THE HIGH TERRAIN TO PRETTY UP A FEW PLACES… MONDAY THRU WEDNESDAY IS MOSTLY DRY, FAIR AND SEASONABLE TEMPERATURE-WISE… XMAS EVE/DAY COULD POSE PROBLEMS, SUCH AS STREET FLOODING, STRONG GUSTY WINDS, HEAVY RAIN, AND EVEN A FEW THUNDERSTORMS, AS SANTA RIDES THE LIGHTNING… #GoPoundSand2020… 7:25am Sun]

Good morning everybody, we’ve got one system working through the region today with the bulk of its moisture passing southeast of us, but we will see a wave of snow showers arrive into the region around noon or so and last for a good part of the afternoon, with some coatings possible.

Highs today will reach the low 30s for the most part, and any snow showers will get out of here by dinner time, maybe a bit earlier. Lows tonight will be in the mid to upper 20s with patchy fog possible late under cloudy skies.

For Monday, we have the Winter Solstice!! The Light is going to start returning later this week!! I tell you, the lack of light this time of year did affect my mood for the first time ever in my life. It wasn’t lasting or pervasive, but it was noticeable, so I have a new appreciation for folks who suffer emotionally/biochemically with the lack of light this time of year.

Anyway, a second storm system rounding the bend of a broad trough across the middle of the country will pass out to sea tomorrow, grazing the Cape and Islands with some rain showers, but leaving the WMass region with just mostly cloudy skies and highs in the mid to upper 30s and lows in the mid to upper 20s with maybe a hilltown flurry.

By Tuesday, a ridge starts to build into the region, but it doesn’t really clear up the skies until later Tuesday night into Wednesday. So, expect mostly cloudy skies with highs in the mid to upper 30s and lows in the mid 20s.

By Wednesday, mostly sunny skies are expected with highs in the low to mid 30s and lows in the upper 20s as high pressure builds off the eastern seaboard to our south, inducing a light southerly flow which will pick up in intensity late in the week.

By Thursday, we’ve got atmospheric issues with which to contend.

A very deep, narrow and sharp trough will be digging way down to the west of the Appalachian Mountains, with a strengthening surface low set to track northeast and then north-northeast into the eastern Great Lakes Region and western PA/NY.

Very cold air will be pulled down and into this trough on its west side, and very warm, moist air will be drawn northward from Florida right up the eastern seaboard toward New England.

This is likely to produce heavy rainfall across the region sometime between Thursday and Friday (XMas Eve and Day), but timing is uncertain still, as to general onsets and departures of rain and wind.

Depending on how warm it can get in our region, we may or may not be dealing with a damaging wind threat as well, with south-southeasterly gusts possibly blowing over 50mph.

While we’re at it, let’s throw a few thunderstorms into the mix! Ahh, New England… and then by next weekend Winter rushes right back in, with some snow showers possible by early next week.

It’s always keeping me on my toes, that’s for sure.

The big concern I have is that we will see rapid snowmelt, which with rain falling, could flood some basements, so something to be aware of. Streets may see ponding on road ways, making travel a challenge in spots.

Hopefully somehow our temps don’t rise much, as that would help prevent wind from mixing down to the surface.

Otherwise, if we get temps in here that reach well into the 50s and possibly hitting 60º, we could also have damaging wind gusts with some power outages. #Because2020

That’s the weather scoop for now, folks, hope you have a great day!
