Western Mass Weather for December 20, 2018

TWO ROUNDS OF STRONG WIND TOMORROW, ONE IN THE MORNING, ONE AT NIGHT… FLOOD WATCHES AND WIND ADVISORIES CONTINUE… RAIN SHOWERS APPROACHING NORTHWEST CT AND WMASS THIS EVENING… ROCKIN’ AND A ROLLIN’, SPLISHIN’ AND A SPLASHIN’ ON THE WAY… (5:30pm Thurs(

Good evening everybody, just a quick update and some graphics to paint a quick picture for what most of us already know is on the way.

–Showers arrive tonight, and become more numerous after midnight
–Temps are rather cold right now with a few low to mid 30s in place, as well as low 40s
–While we can’t rule out a few sleet pellets mixed in at onset (especially if a heavy shower moves through), any ice quickly turns to rain as temps warm after midnight
–The warm front with this storm races through from south to north tomorrow morning, bringing the first round of wind for which Wind Advisories are posted up the Berkshires and Taconics
–A low level jet is forecast to blow over 70 knots a mile up at times tomorrow, and will help create major atmospheric lift and a widespread rain shield
–Rain will fall heavily at times
–Wind will gust 25mph-50mph low terrain to high terrain tomorrow morning
–We rain all day, and get into the warm sector with highs 55-60 degrees
–Westfield, MA record high is 57 set in 2012, we could break that record and others tomorrow
–Rain totals will be somewhere around 2-4″
–A few embedded thunderstorms are possible
–The back edge of precip in the form of a squall line moves through after sunset tomorrow, with every heavy rain possible
–It’s at this time that wind could gust 35-55mph EVERYWHERE, even in the valley
–Some sporadic outages possible
–Rain quits by late tomorrow night, and certainly before Saturday morning sunrise
–The Weekend will be better, milder on Saturday with highs well into the 40s, and cooler Sunday as sunshine increases
–Some light snow is possible Christmas Eve, with a fair weather travel day on XMas

Stay dry late tonight and tomorrow and hold on to your hats! A storm’s a comin’!

HEAVY RAIN, STRONG WIND, PATCHY DENSE FOG, ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS, VERY MILD TEMPS, FLOODING POTENTIAL, SPORADIC POWER OUTAGES ALL ON THE TABLE FOR TONIGHT THROUGH TOMORROW NIGHT… A VERY ANOMALOUS STORM SYSTEM IS ON THE WAY, SO GEAR UP, NEW ENGLANDERS… 2-4″ POSSIBLE… SNOW SHOWERS POSSIBLE NEXT WEEK… XMAS DAY TRAVEL=GOOD…
(6:15am Thurs)

Good morning everybody, a whole messy mess arrives tonight, ransacks the place tomorrow, lingers around hammered drunk tomorrow night, and then waves the middle finger at us on Saturday as it high-tails out of here. Some guest! #Jerk #NoClass

SUMMARY
–Enjoy today, it’s going to be a nice one with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 30s to low 40s
–Clouds increase late, and showers arrive soon after, reaching our region between 6pm or so for northern CT, to 9pm or so along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor up into VT and NH
–Lows tonight should dip into the mid 30s for many of us, and patchy dense fog will be possible as milder air continues to stream northward into our area
–Our incoming storm system will track up the Appalachian Mountains, and blast into southeast Canada, tracking to our west
–A ripping upper level jet, along with a strong low level jet will create abundant atmospheric lift over our region on Friday
–Widespread moderate to very heavy rain at times will be the result along with southerly winds gusting at times to 30-50mph
–A few thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, with the best chance of happening east of the CT River into CMass and northeast CT
–This incoming plume of moisture is powerful, emanating from the tropics and being siphoned up and into New England
–As much as 2-4″ of rain is possible, and Flood Watches continue for the entire region for street and stream flooding due to rainfall and snow melt in S.VT
–Also, with recent frozen ground, water will not be seeping into the ground, but running off, further contributing to flooding potential
–We also cannot rule out an isolated tornado or water spout in southeastern MA and RI
–The Friday morning commute is going to suck, plain and simple
–High temps will reach well into the 50s (with dewpoints in the 50s, humid!) with lows in the 40s as rain continues all day Friday and through Friday night, tapering off during the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning, and ending before noon on Sat.
–Saturday is a mild one as rain ends, with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s as colder air moves in behind it. Temps will drop during the afternoon.
–Sunday through Wednesday looks to feature a couple of quick-moving disturbances that at most will provide some some snow shower activity Monday and Wednesday
–Otherwise, expect fair weather as high pressure builds in with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s
–Another inside runner system could bring some rain by late next week
–Beyond that, winter is set to return by the 1st or 2nd week with a colder and stormier look, and we can’t rule out a snowstorm sometime around New Year’s Eve

I will keep you updated on all of it. Thank you for reading, gear up for rain tomorrow, and have a great day!
