Western Mass Weather for December 1, 2020

[HILLTOWN SNOWSTORM POSSIBLE SATURDAY AFTERNOON INTO SUNDAY MORNING BUT JUST A LOW CHANCE FOR NOW… A FEW SNOW SHOWERS OR MIXED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS IN NORTHWEST MA, THE TACONICS AND SVT THIS MORNING THEN MORE MIXED SCATTERED SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON OVER THE WMASS REGION AS A FINAL WAVE COMES THROUGH ASSOCIATED WITH OUR UPPER LEVEL LOW… THURSDAY THE PICK OF THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS… FRIDAY STARTS NICE, THEN SHOWERS OF RAIN AND/OR SNOW AT NIGHT… SATURDAY LOW POTENTIAL FOR MORE POTENT STORM BUT LOTS OF UNKNOWNS STILL… WEEKEND NOT LOOKING SO HOT… COLDER NEXT WEEK.. 7:00AM WED]

Good morning everybody, we’re on the cool side this morning with temps in the low to mid 30s, but at least it’s dry for most of us.

However, the northern Berkshires/Taconics into SVT are seeing some snow showers track east into the region thanks to our upper level low STILL influencing our weather.

BIGGER PICTURE

There is tons of atmospheric traffic that has mucked up the works and elongated this system from north to south and also kept it from moving much, as it’s still near Lake Ontario.

That’s because of a Rex Block over the Atlantic Ocean (high pressure to the north, low pressure to the south that lock together for a time) that is creating a wall of blocking from north to south, preventing features from moving east and out of here.

WEATHER EXPECTATIONS

And so our upper low bumbles around today, slowly lifting northeast and out of here, but will swipe us with a few snow showers in the hills and rain showers in the valleys with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s.

Lows tonight will be in the mid to upper 20s with a few final snow showers possible.

Some light accumulations are possible in the southern VT mountains.

Thursday looks great, nice and sunny, high pressure nudges in, light west wind, highs in the mid to upper 40s. You can’t ask for much more in early December!  Lows will drop to near freezing as clouds increase at night.

The Friday through Sunday period CONTINUES to be unclear, which is because of a big blocky mess in the center of the country that is causing systems to go underneath (i.e. south of) the muddled region, and over (i.e. north of) it.

We have a southern stream low pressure system and northern stream energy that will try to come together over the northeast like this last storm, but this time, colder air has been already dragged into the region, with fresh snow pack in the Midwest into western PA and NY.

If this storm forms over our region, it’s possible that some of us see substantial accumulating snowfall, especially in the high terrain, but I will continue to refine as we get closer.

For now, Friday starts off partly sunny with highs in the 40s with increasing clouds and a few showers possible at night with lows in the 30s.

Saturday into Sunday is when the storm would/could move in to affect our region, with highs in the low 40s on Saturday, but lows in the 30s and highs in the 30s Sunday could mean rain for some and snow for others, so stay tuned and I will keep you updated on changes to the forecast.

As for next week, whatever this anticipated system and/or air mass does, it appears to drag in colder air for next week, with highs only in the low to mid 30s!

The first day of Meteorological Winter was yesterday, and December is showing some signs of wintry weather, so stay tuned folks!! Have a great day!
