Western Mass Weather for August 6, 2021

THE WARMENING BEGINNETH… MUGGIFICATION ACTIVITIES ALSO COMMENCE… PATCHY FOG BURNS AND OUR STAR SHINES TODAY AS SUMMER MAKES ITS RETURN THROUGH THE WEEKEND… A BRIEF COOL-DOWN MONDAY BEGETS A POTENTIAL HEAT WAVE FOR THE WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY PERIOD WITH SCATTERED AFTERNOON SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EACH DAY… NO FLOODING RAINS EXPECTED, JUST REGULAR AFTERNOON INSTABILITY ACTIVITY… 6:50AM FRI…

Good morning everybody, I hope you slept well. I dreamt that I my eyesight had become a ring of fire with blinding light, which makes me think I slept with my fist jammed into my eyeball – I know that’s a pleasant image to start your morning, and I’m grateful I can serve you in that way. Update: no eye problems upon waking, so things are looking up.

As for our weather, we’ve got patchy dense fog scattered about, notably in Pittsfield and Orange, and some other areas too. This will burn off with time as our still-high Sun angle goes to work on our ground clouds, obliterating them with relative ease.

A sunny day will develop as high pressure noses in from our southwest and south, and highs will rise into the low to upper 80s from high terrain to low terrain areas with light winds. Humidity will be increasing with dewpoints into the mid 60s – a tolerable but more noticeably summer feel.

Lows will settle down into the upper 50s to low 60s with a light south wind under partly cloudy skies.

The weekend looks pretty nice overall, but some showers or thunderstorms will be expected.

For Saturday, a shortwave will track north of our region, and overspread more mid-level moisture into our area producing a partly sunny day with periods of more clouds than sun, and highs will again be in the low to upper 80s with fairly muggy conditions.

In addition, a few isolated showers and thunderstorms will form, most likely over SVT, western MA and northwest CT in higher terrain areas during the afternoon and early evening, but coverage should be spotty. This activity dies down at night, and lows dip into the mid 60s.

For Sunday, a cold front will be approaching the region from the northwest, trailing off of that shortwave that will be now northeast of us at that time, and so a better chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms exists. The cold front may pass through earlier in the day, so an early to late afternoon period of activity is possible, but this may change, so stay tuned for adjustments.

Highs will reach the upper 70s to mid 80s under partly sunny skies, and lows will bottom out in the low to mid 60s.

Monday looks generally dry with an isolated shower or two moving through with highs in the low 80s, and lows in the low 60s.

Tuesday is uncertain right now, as around that time, our cold front that will have recently passed through will return as a warm front, preceding our impending third heat wave of the Summer of 2021 which arrives mid to late week.

The day looks warm with highs in the 80s and scattered showers or storms possible given the frontal passage, but timing is unclear at the moment.

What does look more clear is that we’ll see the biggest surge of heat and humidity move back into the region since the month of June this year during Wednesday through Friday.

Highs look to reach the mid 80s to low 90s each of those days, with a verified heat wave possible as an upper ridge and associated surface western Atlantic high pressure system strengthens and moves into position to drive moist, hot southwesterly flow into New England.

In addition, the typical scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms will dot the landscape as well, with some folks staying dry, and others getting soaked.

Summer returns! Have a great day!
