YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, a quick note at the top to say that I will be taking tomorrow off to get some rest for my back, which still is tweaked from my recent fall down the bottom of my staircase.
Thursday looks like fair weather, and aside from some scattered snow showers at night, I feel like it’s a good morning to try and get some sleep/rest before a very busy weekend shows up.
As for our weather today, we have an upper low that is tracking east through NY state and shows up well on Water Vapor imagery as a circular area of vorticity / spin in the atmosphere, and large-scale vorticity causes convection.
This incoming area of convection, will produce scattered areas of shower activity this afternoon, and some may be on the heavier side.
In addition, temps will be quite cold aloft, so while our highs will reach into the mid 30s to upper 40s from SVT/SWNH south through W&CMass into northern CT, we could see graupel mixed in with any rain showers (i.e. soft hail, or ice-encased snowflakes), or actual snowflakes later in the afternoon and at elevation.
In fact, some isolated coatings are possible in the high terrain by later tonight. It should make for an interesting cloud day!
For tonight, lows will dip into the 20s for just about all of us with west wind gusting up to 20mph, and so some black ice patches may form.
Thursday and Friday will feature high pressure building through the region with west winds gusting 15-25mph plenty of sunshine, and highs in the upper 30s to 40s on Thursday, and then into the mind 40s to mid 50s by Friday.
In between those days some scattered snow showers will move through later Thursday night as a weak wave whips through our flow with Thursday night lows in the mid 20s to low 30s, with lows Friday night in the 30s.
The Saturday to Monday period continues to look very unsettled with periods of precipitation and big questions around exactly where a warm front is going to get hung up as it tries (and likely fails) to pass northeast through the greater WMass region Saturday.
We’ll high pressure to our northeast trying to suppress it to the south, and this battle will help determine who sees wintry 30s and 40s with cold rain or even some icing in parts of SVT/SWNH or even far northern MA, vs. 50s and 60s (and maybe 70º?!) in far southern MA and northern CT.
Fronts are clash zones, and cause rising air, so expect periods of showers starting as early as Friday night and lasting (with dry periods mixed in) through Sunday and Monday as the whole mess gets swept seaward with (hopefully) drier conditions moving in for Tuesday.
I am not going to be able to parse/sort out the details of Saturday, Sunday and Monday until the day before each, the way this pattern is shaping up, as high uncertainty remains.
Have a great day!
