YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, Happy Thanksgiving to you! I hope you are able to enjoy time with friends, family or loved ones today, and if you are alone, I’ve been there too, so I hope you are able to relax and read a good book, listen to music, or just be still.
I am exceedingly thankful for all of you and your presence and support in my life, thank you so much for everything.
As for our weather, a much-advertised mixed winter Thanksgiving Day storm has arrived, and it’s already snowing, icing and raining across the greater WMass region as I type.
One change of note is that a Winter Weather Advisory has been hoisted for the northern Berkshires, which I had alluded to being possible a couple of days ago.
Depending on how things develop across west county, I would also not be surprised to see a short-fused Advisory go up for western Franklin County later this morning, depending of course on observations, so please, please, please… if you live anywhere from Leyden, Colrain, Shelburne, West Whately and Conway westward through Franklin County, please post your condition and precipitation reports below this main morning post. Folks connected to the National Weather Service sometimes scan this page for observations, so your “ground truth” is helpful. Thanks.
Highs today will reach the low 30s in the high terrain of northwest MA, southern VT and high-terrain areas of southwest NH, up to the low 40s in the lower CT River Valley in southern MA and northern CT, meaning most of us are in the mid to upper 30s.
Our storm system is developing and approaching the northern NJ coastline and will exit and track over southeast CT this afternoon and off into EMass and the Gulf of Maine tonight.
This has already pushed high-terrain / hilltown / mountain snow into parts of the Berkshires, northern Litchfield, western hilltowns, southern VT, the Taconics, and southwest NH, with some icing in Franklin County (which I posted about at 5:30am) and rain elsewhere in WMass, CMass and northern CT.
This setup will be the general theme today, as this has been well-advertised as an elevation-dependent snowstorm. Above 1000 or 1500 feet and you should be seeing mostly snow, with some rain mix south of the MA-VT line, and mostly snow at elevation in southern VT, with varied conditions in southwest NH.
It is that area of the eastern Franklin County highlands (Wendell, Shutesbury, North Leverett, Northfield, Warwick, etc.) and into northwest Worcester County where in this marginal temperature environment with heavy-enough precip we could flip to snow with some light accumulations this afternoon and early evening.
Everything ends between 6-9pm tonight, except we could see some upslope snow showers lingering in the northern Berkshires/Taconics and southwest VT through midnight or so with additional light accumulations (pretty-up-the-place type snow, as I like to call it).
Starting tomorrow through Wednesday it’s fair, colder, and dry with blustery conditions at times, and a chance at some lake effect snow showers over the weekend for the Berkshires and southwest VT, followed by a chance for an Alberta Clipper with light snow by Wednesday night into Thursday.
You know the pattern has changed when you’re talking about Alberta Clippahs!!!!!
