YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, we have a cold front sweeping into the region this morning and showers are crossing over from NY into southwest New England this early morning.
Temperatures are above freezing in many areas, but they are at or below freezing in southern VT, parts of extreme northwest MA, and southwest NH. Winter Weather Advisories have expanded into all of SVT and SWNH, and freezing rain will set up in some of those colder spots thorough this morning, producing ice glaze and slippery surfaces, so be aware and take your time up that way if you are traveling.
The rest of in WMass, CMass and northern CT (and even some of the milder valley spots north of the MA border in SVT&SWNH) will see mainly rain showers from about 8am-2pm, give or take.
Highs today will reach the mid to upper 40s, and some patchy fog is possible. As our front sweeps east, a secondary low will develop along it near RI or southeast MA which may amp the precip a bit over northern CMass, but generally this will produce two-tenths up to a half inch of rain for most of us.
Behind the front tonight, west winds will pick up and gust 15-30mph with lows dropping into the upper 20s to low 30s as we dry out.
Wednesday looks breezy in the morning, with slackening winds late in the day under mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s.
Wednesday night will gradually see clouds increase as our Thanksgiving Day storm ejects east-northeast through the Tennessee Valley and off of the Mid-Atlantic coastline by Thursday. Lows Wednesday night drop to the low to mid 30s.
Precipitation will push into the region as our storm slowly deepens as it passes south of New England. We’ll be on the cold side of the storm, but we won’t have had any real Arctic cold ahead of it.
Given this, we’re likely to see a cold Pioneer Valley rainstorm (much needed!) with some snow mixing in if this storm amplifies more than I think it will right now.
However, the western hilltowns, Berkshires, southern VT, and even some areas above 1000 feet in far northern Litchfield County CT, northern CMass and southwest NH could see a coating to up to 4” of wet snow on Thursday into Thursday night, with some mix at times, too.
If this storm DOES crank up more as it passes south of us on that east-northeast track, those snow totals could go up more to like 2-6”, and as much as 8” in the high mountain peaks in SVT. If that happened we could see some more slushy coatings into more of WMass, but for now I am thinking the storm doesn’t crank up more, but I will keep you updated.
Highs on Thanksgiving are only in the mid 30s to low 40s with lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s, so some slick hilltown travel is likely, so plan accordingly.
What this system really sets us up for is the coldest air of the incoming cold season!
We’ll see a partly to mostly sunny dry period from Friday through the weekend, but it will be getting colder as the weekend goes along, and will be breezy, so a real winter feel is on the way.
Highs in the mid 30s to mid 40s Friday plunge into highs in the 30s for the weekend, with some upper 20s highs in the Berkshires, SVT and SWNH, with accompanying lows in the teens and 20s. BRRR!!!!
Have a great day and remember Monte Belmonte is marching today to raise money for our Western Mass Food Bank. Have compassion for your neighbors in need and call 888-323-HOPE.
