MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, I’m pretty sure it’s pretty safe to say that we’ve finally flipped the switch to the 2022-23 Cold Season.
That’s not to say we won’t see mild surges at times between now and just after the Vernal Equinox, but the cold air has been generated and pooling in Canada and is now emptied into the United States, and finally reached New England with these gusty northwesterlies overnight.
Temps are in the 20s and 30s this morning, and with a peak gust of 45mph measured in Peru, the weather has been letting us know overnight that we’re shifting, and hinting at our first snowfall late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
I’ll get into those details below, but for now, we’ve got a breezy, cold morning, that will turn into a nice, but brisk later-Autumn day with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s with winds calming down with time.
For tonight, winds will slacken, skies will be clear, and it will be dry as a bone, causing lows to tank into the mid 10s to mid 20s across the region, generating the coldest night of the Autumn thus far, so bundle up on the way out the door tomorrow morning or for late night dog walks!
For Tuesday, we should see some partial sun early with highs in the low 40s, but clouds will be increasing and thickening as a complex storm system heads our way, destined to blanket the ground in white for some of us for the first time as head towards Winter.
By Tuesday evening, primary low pressure will be tracking into the Great Lakes as secondary low develops near the Mid-Atlantic coast and tracks towards somewhere either side of Martha’s Vineyard.
This track is too close into the coast (i.e. too far north) to produce an all-snow event for much of WMass region (warmer air will work north about a mile above our heads), so many of us will mixed snow and rain, brief snow to rain, or a mix of snow then ice then rain in the Pioneer Valley from Greenfield east and south in MA and CT.
Lows will drop into the upper 20s to low 30s, then rise in the early morning, which flips many of us to rain.
SNOW AMOUNTS
However, west of the CT River Valley in the western hilltowns of MA, northern Litchfield County CT, the Berkshires, Taconics, and southern VT into southwest NH, a coating to 3″ of snow accumulation is expected.
This also goes for the higher terrain in the Worcester Hills in CMass.
We could also see some coatings of snow in the valley if the storm tracks a little further south than expected, we’ll have to see.
TIMING
The bulk of any snow accumulation comes on the front end, as precip will arrive into the colder air just before midnight and into the pre-dawn hours, which is perfect timing for such a potential early-season wintry outcome.
ICING
There is a low chance of some freezing drizzle or rain occuring in some low elevation spots providing briefly slippery travel, so I will keep an eye on that.
As Wednesday wears on, most of us flip to rain, though snow may hold on in the highest peaks of NW. MA and S. VT, OR it may go to rain there, and change briefly back to snow before ending by Wednesday afternoon.
Highs will reach the upper 30s to low 40s with lows in the 20s.
Thursday through Sunday looks like fair weather should rule the roost, but it’s gonna be cold, folks. No 50s or 60s are coming at this point.
Highs will generally range from the mid 30s in the high terrain to the low 40s in the valleys with varying amounts of sunshine.
On Thursday night we could also see some lake effect snow showers in the western hills, Berkshires, Litchfields, Taconics and southern Greens (what I lovingly refer to as the WHBLTSGs, which rolls off the tongue with ease).
That does it for now, have a great day, and remember that there’s only 7 days left to Order my Educational, Practical, WMass-centric, and highly Gift-able Weather Wall Calendar, so be sure to order or get more info today (link below):

AND REMEMBER…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
