YOUR WEEKLY WEATHER NUTSHELL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
–Good morning folks, so much for a day off yesterday as downpours and a couple of severe thunderstorms developed further south than expected
–We also got a report of 1.25″ hail in Colrain, MA along with 1-3″ of rain in some parts of Franklin County
–We’re starting off with some patchy dense fog in Pittsfield, Orange, and Bennington VT, but this will lift in time this AM
–Then we’ll see temps soar into the mid 80s to low 90s under mostly sunny skies with dewpoints cresting 60º, so it will feel a bit humid
–I can’t rule out a few showers or a thunderstorm late this afternoon, but without the influence of a shortwave passing north of us, these should be hit or miss and not as potent as yesterday
–Lows tonight dip into the low to mid 60s as a pre-frontal air mass extends east into the greater WMass region
–For tomorrow, I expect mostly cloudy skies with some showers or a thunderstorm early in the morning
–High temps then climb well into the 80s with dewpoints in the 60s, with instability increasing as the cold front approaches in the afternoon
–This should spark off potentially strong to severe thunderstorms and some downpours by afternoon into the evening
–The strongest storms should generally be south of the Rt. 9 corridor in MA with larger hail and/or isolated damaging wind gusts possible
–There’s a low chance showers, some heavy, could continue into the night before moving out of the region, with lows in the upper 50s
–By Friday, high pressure should develop into the region with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s with a light west wind and less humidity
–Friday night looks lovely with lows in the mid 50s under clear skies
–Memorial Day Weekend (at least Saturday and Sunday) should feature partly to mostly sunny skies with highs either side of 80º, with an afternoon chance each day of an instability shower or two, with lows in the 50s
–By Memorial Monday, rain chances increase substantially, but timing is still uncertain, but it looks rather wet as of now
–Into next week, an unsettled pattern look to keep the shower chances in the forecast, but I will refine as we get closer and will be up and at it every day going forward
YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, in life everything changes constantly, and I suppose to think it would be different with the weather is folly on my part.
As for yesterday’s heavy rain, thunderstorms, and large hail in Franklin County, an unexpected convergence happened between the shortwave to our north and an offshore-originated sea front that interacted over southern VT, southwest NH and northern MA (the energy from the shortwave also came a bit more south, I believe).
Going forward, the Nutshell above tells the daily story, but we’ve basically got a hot and fairly humid day on the way today with Air Quality Alerts up for southeastern parts of WMass, all of CMass and southwest NH, so if you have respiratory stuff, just take it easy outside in the peak heat of the day.
As we did yesterday, some folks will reach the low 90s today in the Pioneer Valley, and with that heat and moderate humidity, a couple of showers or a t-storm could pop even in the absence of any nearby upper level shortwaves passing through our longitude.
It’s tomorrow that we’ve got a Level 1 out of 5 Severe Thunderstorm Risk published by the Storm Prediction Center, and any storms could contain larger hail or isolated damaging wind gusts in the later afternoon and evening.
In addition, a few showers or a storm may arrive for our early Thursday morning as well. Lastly, some showers may linger into Thursday night, and some may be on the heavier side as our front slowly tracks east and away.
It’ll be warm and humid tomorrow, and mostly cloudy, so if you need some sun, soak it up today… or wait until Friday!
Friday looks lovely behind the cold front with highs upper 70s to mid 80s under mostly sunny skies, and then we move into Memorial Day Weekend, the Saturday and Sunday of which look pretty decent (warm, at least partly sunny, and with a couple instability showers possible each day).
Monday, however, continues to look quite wet, so if you have outdoor plans you might want to start developing contingencies, but I will continue to update as we get closer.
Have a great day!
>>> BE KIND <<<
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
