Western Mass Regional Weather for June 29, 2021

HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY CONTINUES TODAY AND TOMORROW WITH HEAT ADVISORIES CONTINUING FOR THE ENTIRE REGION EXCEPT THE SOUTHERN GREENS IN VT… VERY MUGGY WITH HEAT INDICES OVER 100º AGAIN AS A SPRAWLING RIDGE OFF THE DELMARVA PUMPS HOT AIR INTO OUR REGION… ISOLATED SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING, ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF THE RT. 9 CORRIDOR IN MA AND CT… BETTER CHANCE FOR SCATTERED STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TOMORROW LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING WITH DAMAGING WIND GUSTS POSSIBLE… RAINY AND COOLER END TO THE WEEK… HOLIDAY WEEKEND LOOKS SEASONABLE BUT POSSIBLY SHOWERY… 6:50AM TUES…

Good morning everybody, what’d you say?

I can’t hear you with all those fans blasting away.

It’s like a permanent white noise machine over here, but believe me, I’m not complaining!

I’m grateful to be able to cool down, as some may not be able to with air conditioning or fans.

ANOTHER WAY TO COOL DOWN
However, this brings me to something everybody can do, provided you live in a house, condo, or apartment (or can get access to one) that has running water and a shower or a tub:

*Cold Showers*

I’m no Wim Hof, but I’ve been inspired by him recently, and I find the cold showers to be therapeutic on many levels.

Now, if you’ve never done it before, I don’t suggest jumping right into freezing cold water, no. You could run into problems if you have any heart or pulmonary conditions, so EASE into it.

You can always get in a “cooler” bath or “cooler” shower, or take a warm shower, then drop the temp for a little while and bring it back up, so you ease into it.

It just struck me this morning that cooler/colder showers and baths are a great way to cool down in these conditions, provided you have these domestic resources that are easy to take for granted, so maybe consider trying it if you just can’t cool down – cool or cold water in the tub or shower!

WEATHER REPORT
We have another very hot and humid day on tap for our Tuesday, and we’re starting off well into the 70s, with some folks already pushing 80º!

Heat Advisories are continued for all of us today except the southern Greens, but will expire tomorrow for the Berkshires and Litchfield County, and the western hilltowns for Wednesday.

However for the Pioneer Valley in WMass and north-central CT and points east, Heat Advisories continue through tomorrow/Wednesday evening.

Highs today will once again reach the upper 80s to upper 90s from high terrain to low, and it will be muggy – basically a repeat of yesterday, so gear up for another scorchah!

It will be mostly sunny through much of the day, but we should see some isolated showers and thunderstorms form this afternoon and track into the region.

There’s very little wind shear with these, but low level lapse rates (temp gradient from surface to sky) will be steep (meaning temps decrease fairly rapidly with height lower down), so convection will pop in places.

Some storms could produce a gusty wind, but heavy rain is the main issue with any of these.

Any activity dissipates this evening, and lows will drop into the upper 60s to low 70s with continued soupy air mass in place.

One more very hot and humid day tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s and heat indices over 100º in some spots under mostly sunny skies is expected.

However, things finally begin to change and break down in terms of this deep summer pattern.

BIGGER PICTURE
The death ridge that has been literally baking the northwest U.S. up into B.C. is expected to track east-northeast over the next couple of days. As this happens the upper level trough over the Hudson Bay down into the Great Lakes will get its northern aspect pressed on from the west (a westward press!), and cause the trough to flatten out, become more west-southwest to east-northeast in orientation, and push more towards New England.

This will do two things in terms of our weather impacts.

1. It will send a couple of waves towards our region, and press the jet stream our way as well, which will produce more wind shear and a better chance for that to combine with our soupy air mass and heat to produce scattered strong to severe thunderstorms tomorrow late afternoon and into the evening, with isolated wind damage possible.

2. The circulation around this trough over the Midwest is likely to help develop and direct copious rainfall into our region for Thursday into Friday as the trough slows down and possibly stalls. Because the source region of air feeding into the trough is from Hudson Bay, we’ll cool down as all of this change squashes our Bermuda high well south and east, substantially reducing its influence on our weather, thereby breaking the heat wave on Thursday.

WRAPPING IT UP
Lows Wednesday night will be in the 65-70º range with some showers and thunderstorms still possible at night, with continued humidity.

Humidity is still rather high on Thursday, but temps drop into the mid 70s to mid 80s. Any morning partial sunshine gives way to mostly cloudy conditions, and periods of showers, downpours and non-severe thunderstorms in the afternoon, evening and into Friday.

Lows Thursday night drop into the low 60s, and then highs will only be in the low to mid 70s Friday with dewpoints hopefully collapsing into the 50s to low 60s.

The weekend is still murky in terms of impacts, but expect at least cooler temps in the 70s to near 80º, and expect SOME showery activity, though hopefuly it wanes by the 4th.

More on the holiday weekend as we get closer, and keep it tuned in here for updates in terms of any severe weather potential over the next day or two.

Have a great day and stay cool!
