YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning folks, I’m expecting periods of scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms at any point today, but especially in the afternoon and evening, with potential for a few rounds of unsettled weather today.
A few showers are ongoing in southern VT and the far northern Berkshires and this line should weaken with time.
Temps are already in the upper 50s to 60s, and this means temps will come up pretty quickly where hazy sunshine is present.
Highs today should reach the mid 70s to mid 80s with humid conditions, and with some upper level support and an approaching cold front (along with associated wind shear) from our northwest, we’ll see instability increase across the region by mid-day.
From what I can see, we could see a few rounds of weather across differing parts of the greater WMass region.
GENERAL SETUP: 3 ROUNDS
As of early morning this seems more like to present as a mid-day cluster or set of individual thunderstorm cells, followed by more of a squall line by mid to late afternoon, and lastly ending with some more heavy rain showers with some embedded thunder later this evening and into the first part of the night before the whole soupy mess swings east-southeast and out to sea as the cold front passes through, setting up a lovely weekend.
HAZARDS
We were always expected to see a sharper low-level temperature gradient from surface to a couple miles up or so (i.e. “low level lapse rate”), but now it appears that the mid-level lapse rates will be a bit sharper as well, and this is what can produce taller and stronger updrafts in storms cells and loft precip high above the freezing layer, and generate hail of increasing size.
Given this, all hazards (except a tornado) or possible today, including straight line damaging wind gusts, hail (mostly small, but up to an inch in diameter possible), street flooding, and isolated instances of flash flooding possible, with of course lightning as well.
PLEASE NOTE: It’s not going to be possible to time out these fast-forming, fast-moving, small-scale storms, or to say when one will impact your neighborhood, unfortunately.
I do have a concern for heavy rain tonight as a passing coastal storm well southeast of us may help amp departing showers and moisture, and it would be south of the Pike in southern WMass, northern CT and over to southern CMass that could see some heavy rain tonight as well.
After today’s and this evening’s unsettled weather, we’re off to the races for both an amazing weekend of mostly sunny skies with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s and low humidity, but then a serious heat wave for Tuesday through Friday with some areas hitting 100º by late week with high humidity… and plenty of sunshine.
So, stormy/changeable today, lovely clear weekend, hot and humid next week with many days of sunshine on the way.
For now, I am focused on today’s weather threats, so please stay tuned and I will do my best to keep you updated.
Have a great day, peeps!
