YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning folks, we’re entering what appears to be the last of 3 heat waves in this very warm to hot and very humid pattern we’ve been in for what will have been a solid 4 weeks by the middle of this coming week.
For today, we start off with patchy fog in spots, and for some it will be dense (a quarter mile in visibility or less).
After fog dissipates, we will be left with an increasingly sunny day thanks to high pressure building into the region.
With strong sunshine, highs in the mid 80s to low 90s, and a light west flow the hope and expectation is that we’ll develop a well mixed atmosphere near the surface, which will help to pull in and down some lower humidity for a day, with dewpoints in the 50s and 60s, so that should be a welcome one-day change before we head right back into the soup for Monday through Wednesday.
Lows tonight will dip into the low to mid 60s under mostly clear skies.
For Monday, Heat Advisories are already hoisted for an increase in humidity which will begin overnight tonight into tomorrow, along with hotter temperatures.
Highs will hit the upper 80s to mid 90s with heat indices climbing into the mid 90s to low 100s with dewpoints climbing back into the upper 60s to mid 70s.
Mostly sunny skies are expected, but by end of the day a shortwave will work into the region, and this could pop some scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms in this very humid environment.
This activity may last past sunset, but should wane thereafter, with lows dipping into the 65-70º range with patchy fog possible.
By Tuesday, the peak of our incoming heat wave will occur, with highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s, and I can’t even rule out a few upper 90s readings in the southern Pioneer Valley from Holyoke to Hartford.
Because of this, Excessive Heat Watches have been hoisted for Tuesday for WMass, CMass and northern CT, and I expect for the first time in 2024, some of those will in fact be converted to Excessive Heat Warnings, while northern and western areas may convert to Heat Advisories.
The bottom line is that some heat indices may crest 105º, so Tuesday is a day to avoid the heat and humidity if you are able to, and if you aren’t, then stay hydrated and take cooling breaks when you can.
A few isolated showers or thunderstorms are also possible in the afternoon evening, with lows hanging in the low to mid 70s with very humid conditions.
By Wednesday, our final heat wave day arrives with highs again in the upper 80s to mid 90s under partly sunny skies with very humid conditions and dewpoints in the low to mid 70s.
A strong cold front with much drier air behind it coming out of Canada should be pushing into the greater WMass region by late afternoon or early evening, but timing is subject to change.
If this front comes through by or before dinner time to take advantage of the heating of teh day and high humidity, we could see strong to severe thunderstorms with capacity for damaging winds pushing through the region.
But if the front holds off into the night, we’ll still see showers and thunderstorms, but intensity would likely be tamped down.
Lows will be in the low to mid 60s, and aside from a few early morning showers, Thursday should develop into a mostly sunny day, a bit breezy, with decreased humidity and highs in the mid 70s to low 80s, and lows n the 50s!
Thursday night is an evening to go to Brewster Court between the parking garage and Northampton Brewery to check out my band King Radio 6-8pm, but also a night to open all the house windows and let the fresh air in!
Friday and Saturday also look sunny and warm with tolerable humidity levels, and highs in the low to mid 80s with lows near 60º as Canadian high pressure establishes itself for a bit.
Have a great day and rest of your weekend!
