Western Mass Regional Weather for January 5, 2023

DAVE’S WEEKLY WEATHER NUTSHELL
–Showers are moving out this morning, have mostly exited
–Patchy fog and drizzle possible today, otherwise mostly dry
–Temps did not cool down overnight due lack of wind flow
–Temps will come down by this evening with freezing drizzle or freezing fog causing some slick spots in the advised areas (see headline)
–A mid-level wave tracks east into the region Friday bringing snow and rain, and snow will accumulate for many
–It may snow hard for a time, and biggest concern is Route 2 corridor from Greenfield east to Fitchburg and north into the Brattleboro to Monadnock/Jaffrey stretch where 1-4″ could fall
–A coating to 2″ will fall elsewhere in the greater WMass region, with some rain mixing in over the lower valley elevations
–Seasonably cold, fair weekend ahead
–For now, fair weather expected into middle of next week as two storms (Mon and Wed) track south of the region, but before we jump into the weather discussion/details below, let’s check a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with their newest location in West Springfield, MA.

MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, generally speaking the icing threat is much reduced through tonight, and non-existent this morning, but a chance for a burst of accumulating wet snow has increased overnight and may impact travel especially in northern MA, SVT and SWNH tomorrow morning into the afternoon.

For today, we have a few leftover showers and patchy fog and drizzle in spots.

Showers will mostly abate and it should be mostly dry and cloudy day, but areas of patchy fog and drizzle will sit around at times.

Highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s are basically being realized this morning, and will continue to slowly decline as cold air slowly drains south into the region today and tonight, but it will be a more gradual process.

Winter Weather Advisories were scaled back to cover only western Franklin County, northern Worcester County and southwest NH for this late afternoon and tonight for freezing drizzle and freezing fog icy areas as temps drop to and just below freezing by tonight.

Lows elsewhere will be mostly in the low to mid 30s, so tonight is really the time to be aware of slick surfaces.

For Friday, we have a mid-level wave moving into the region, and it will produce steep mid-level lapse rates (a sharp gradient of milder temps lower down and much colder temps higher up) which will encourage quickly-rising air (i.e. convection) and should produce a burst of moderate to heavy snow that may get the aid of dynamic cooling to cover the ground with wet snow in many areas by tomorrow afternoon, starting in the morning west of the I-91 corridor.

I will update again this evening with the latest, but for now, areas in central/eastern Franklin County into northern CMass and up into southeast VT and southern NH could see lowered visibility with a bit of a thump of snow and around 1-4″ by Friday sunset, with a C-2″ elsewhere in our greater WMass region down into northern CT.

Temps will be very marginal, likely above freezing well into the 30s, but that dynamic cooling potential could allow the snow to reach the ground and accumulate if it snows hard enough for long enough. Lows will be in the upper 20s to low 30s.

The weekend into the middle of next week looks fair, assuming a couple of waves next week track south of the region and out to sea. Highs will be in the mid 30s to low 40s with lows in the 20s.

Have a great day!

AND REMEMBER…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
