Good morning, everybody, uhh…. It’s wicked cold outside, and right now I look like Jack Nicholson from The Shining near the end of the movie when he’s a skyward-gazing frozen block, yet somehow my fingers keep moving and my brain is still online, so at least I’ve got that going for me.
As for our weather, it’s cold, have a nice day!
Just kidding, but seriously, the temps really took a nosedive overnight with fresh snowpack and a dearth of wind, which allowed any “heat” to radiate out into the cosmic firmament in which we’re suspended and spinning.
Temps are ranging across the greater WMass region from 10º above zero to -15º below zero as our recent snowstorm preceded the freezer setting up shop.
Highs today will only climb into the teens with some areas in SVT possibly staying in the upper single digits with a mix of sun and some increasing clouds and westerly gusts could get up to 20mph at times, putting wind chills into the single digits to near 0º.
Lows tonight will drop down to about 5 above to -10 below zero, and with some light wind, wind chills could dip to -15 to -20º below zero in the western hilltowns and northern Berkshires where Cold Weather Advisories have been hoisted.
Elsewhere, wind chills will range in the single digits below zero down to -10º, possibly.
Highs tomorrow will be in the teens again under sunny skies with lighter wind, and lows either side of 0º under clear skies.
By Thursday, Arctic high pressure that has produced our very cold weather along with an historic Deep South snowstorm that has prompted Blizzard Warnings in Louisiana as of this morning (haven’t seen that in watching weather for over 40 years) will push east and develop a more southwesterly flow into New England.
Highs will increase into the 20s with lows dropping into the single digits above zero under partly sunny skies during the day and partly cloudy skies at night.
In fact, Friday and Saturday look similar to Thursday with highs in the mid to upper 20s and lows in the single digits under sunny/clear skies.
By Sunday into Monday, an even stronger southerly flow develops, pushing temps up to seasonable levels, with highs in the low to mid 30s and lows in the teens.
As temps come up, we may have a storm or two to deal with by Monday afternoon into Tuesday, and it could be wintry IF it comes to pass.
The reality is that we have too much of a zonal, more stable flow to get anything beyond some coastal slider storms (like we saw Sunday night) or some Alberta Clippers like we saw in December.
You simply can’t develop classic nor’easters, blockbusters, or bombogenesis-y blizzards without a different pattern in place, and while there are some modest hints of that into February, we’ll take it one day at a time for now, and for now, it’s freakin’ cold!
Have a great day!
