Western Mass Regional Weather for January 17, 2022 (updated 3:50pm)

MONDAY P.M. UPDATE: SCATTERED MIXED SHOWERS TURNING TO SNOW SHOWERS WILL AFFECT THE HIGH TERRAIN IN WESTERN CT, MA, AND SVT THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT AS OUR LOW TRACKS NORTH AND PULLS WEST WIND INTO OUR REGION IN ITS WAKE… LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED FOR SOME… BLUSTERY CONDITIONS OVERNIGHT AND ON TUESDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE MOVES IN… FAIR WEATHER THROUGH FRIDAY… POTENTIAL WINTER STORM ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING… 3:50pm Monday…

Good afternoon everybody, our storm has lifted northwest and north of us, and will continue to track north-northeast and away from the greater WMass region.

A few late afternoon snow showers are expected in the Berkshires, Taconics and SVT, and then more upslope snow showers with light accumulations resulting is expected later tonight and into the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday morning.

As the pressure gradient tightens in the wake of low pressure lifting north, west winds will pick up and gust 25-35mph later tonight and into Tuesday as lows drop tonight into the mid teens to low 20s under partly cloudy skies.

For Tuesday, mostly sunny skies will develop in response to high pressure moving into the region, with highs topping out in the upper teens to low 20s with west winds gusting to 30mph and then slackening at night, with lows crashing into the mid to high single digits above zero.

For Wednesday, a Clipper system will track north of us through northern New England and float a warm frontal boundary through the region, which will result in mostly cloudy skies with highs in the 35-40º range.

A few snow showers are possible at night with a cold frontal passage and lows will drop into the low to mid 20s with Thursday highs in the 25-30º range from north to south.

Thursday night into Friday night looks VERY cold once again as an Arctic air mass advects into the region with lows both nights likely below zero and highs only the teens on Friday.

This will set the table once again for a potential coastal storm on Saturday afternoon and night and once again, if it tracks “right” we could have a substantial snowstorm on our hands.

But for now, we monitor. Have a great evening!

P.S. I am running a 2022 Weather Calendar Clearance Sale, so if you want one for yourself or as a birthday present, send me a message, and for those that already have, I will respond to you asap and will be able to fulfill your requests. Thank you!

10:30AM MORNING UPDATE AND ANALYSIS: FINAL BANDS OF RAIN, SLEET AND SNOW SHOWERS ARE MOVING THROUGH THE GREATER WMASS REGION BETWEEN 10-11AM… YOU WILL WANT TO CLEAR ANY DRIVEWAYS, WALKWAYS, AND PATHS BEFORE NIGHTFALL AS WE WILL REFREEZE OVERNIGHT… Good morning everybody, thank you so much for all of your reports, pics and vids, I really appreciate it!

It’s always great to get a real-time picture of the ground truth of our region, so thank you!

As for our storm, it is starting to wind down, though we have one more showery final band with snow, sleet and rain of varying intensities to work north through the region through 11am or so.

Temps are mostly above freezing, but we’re still at or below freezing in the northeast Berkshires, northwestern hilltowns (of Franklin and Hampshire County) and portions of southern VT, where snow is continuing to accumulate.

This final band will lift through the region through about 11am or so, and then we’ll get into a lull into the afternoon as our storm lifts north of our latitude, destined for northwest VT and then Canada.

Highs will reach the low 30s to low 40s (basically where they are now), but cold air is working in from the southwest, of all directions!!

Why is that?

As you can see in the attached 925mb (1/2 mile up) and 850mb (1 mile up) analyses of the SPC pressure charts, our milder low level easterly jet is lifting northeast and away, and losing the battle to flood the air aloft with above-freezing temps (which is why our ice and rain developed this morning for some of us, especially valley locations).

Meanwhile, our mid-level low pressure centers are tracking northeast and generating their own colder air aloft, which is pushing northeast into the WMass region with time and as we enter the afternoon.

This will cause temps at all levels to drop back toward freezing by the mid to late afternoon, and likely flip any rain showers back to snow showers as the mid level low makes its closest pass and pushes a low-level trough through our region.

We’ll also see winds veer out of the west and southwest gusting 25 to 40mph at times later this afternoon and overnight with additional snow showers and upslope snowfall as those winds take remnant moisture, push it up the west-facing slopes of the Litchfields, Berkshires, Taconics, southern Greens and western hilltowns, and condense it out in the form of snow over those areas, where an additional coating to 3″ of pure fluff may fall.

Lows will tank into the teens, so wind chills may dip into the single digits at times overnight and into early Tuesday morning, at which time every bit of standing water and slush will refreeze.

Tomorrow looks mostly sunny with highs in the mid teens to mid 20s from the high terrain to central/lower Pioneer Valley, and continued blustery with west winds gusting over 30mph at times.

I will update again later this afternoon regarding any expected snow shower activity and wind potential.

I would love it if you could comment below with current weather conditions, snow totals, and any pics or vids you have, and list your town, if you wouldn’t mind.

Have a great day, and stay safe on any slippery roads!

Good morning folks, I’ve been up since 2:45am monitoring our storm and I have a dearth of reports from the Berkshires, western hilltowns and SVT, so please chime in with snow totals and current conditions if you’re out that way. We’ve got plenty to discuss as our storm morphs today, but first I’ve got a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with a new location in West Springfield, MA.

DISCUSSION:
Good morning everybody, snow moved into the region last night between 9pm and midnight, and many of us got a quick thump of 2-6″, with some sub-2″ amounts as I mentioned would the case last night, with sleet quickly mixing to northern CT and parts of the Springfield metro region.

Interestingly, I had one reader on Twitter report 1″ of snow in Agawam, MA, and the next town over in Southwick, MA reported 5″ by a trained NWS spotter – put that on your snow map (that’s why I generally don’t like using them).

SNOW/SLEET/RAIN BECOMING SHOWERY
Unexpectedly, the precipitation shield is breaking up rapidly over the WMass region just over the past hour or so, probably due to the intense squall line that has taken over to the southeast (intense rising air is leading to subsidence on the west side of the southeast MA squall line, and where this subsidence sets up can’t always be predicted ahead of time, unfortunately).

CAPE(S) WIND DAMAGE/OUTAGES
This squall line about to rip over RI and southeast MA including Cape Cod (which will also tag Cape Ann in Essex County, or northeast MA) will be causing wind damages and power outages there with gusts over 70mph, between 7-10am from south to north, so batten ’em down out that way! Heavy rain is moving into eastern Worcester County down into Providence as well.

WMASS WIND
Gust out of the east will continue to blow 25-40mph in the lower elevations, and 35-55mph in the higher elevations, and then lighten and shift later this morning, veering around to the west by afternoon and gusting to 40mph by tonight. Some isolated outages are possible.

WMASS CURRENT CONDITIONS
Temps are generally at or above freezing from Northampton / Amherst south through northern CT at 6am, with temps in the mid to upper 20s over the Berkshires, northwestern hilltowns, SVT and SWNH where snow continues, with sleet mixing into the southern Berkshires.

Even though this first “snow thump band” is breaking up now, more precipitation is coming from NJ and lifting north toward toward Long Island at 6am.

After a break in the action (with lighter snow or snow/sleet mix over the Berkshires and western hilltowns up into SVT), we’ll fill back in again between 8-11am with snow, sleet and rain, and then the storm should lift north and out of here.

Some roads are slippery and snow covered early this morning, and if untreated, some areas where sleet and freezing rain are falling or recently fell will be slippery as well, so practice caution.

From Holyoke south and east, it’s mainly a rain event now through late morning.

A NOTE ON TOTALS
Snow totals should generally have ended up in the 2-5″ range in the valley from Brattleboro south (though maybe a little more in Bratt) , with 4-8″ in the high terrain east of the I-91 corridor, and instead of 8-12″ like I said last night probably more like 6-12″ in the northwest hilltowns of western Hampshire/Franklin and SVT, with more like 3-6″ in the southern Berkshires down into northwest CT.

MORE SNOW THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING
After our low center lifts northeast through PA and NY and crosses our latitude, the upper low will make its closest pass and that will create a broad area of lift and scattered rain and snow showers, turning to snow showers by late afternoon and the evening as colder air works back into the region.

An upslope snow event will develop over the Litchfields, Taconics, Berkshires, southern Greens and western hills with an additional coating to 3″ possible, maybe 4″ in some spots with light fluffy snow!

So the snow isn’t over until early Tuesday morning for some of us, and lows will drop into the teens tonight with blustery conditions lasting into Tuesday which should be mostly sunny with highs in the upper teens to mid 20s.

On Wednesday a Clipper system tracks north of us, and could bring some snow showers through SVT and SWNH, along with milder air and clouds with highs in the mid to upper 30s in WMass and northern CT and low to mid 30s in SVT/SWNH. Lows will be in the upper teens to low 20s.

We get colder late this week and will be watching a storm signal for Sunday or Monday, so stay tuned for updates.

I will continue to monitor today’s storm, and update you by mid/late morning, and again later this afternoon and tonight, along with my morning report tomorrow morning.

Have a great day, thx for the reports, stay tuned for updates, and I hope things go your way today!

P.S. I am running a clearance sale on some leftover 2022 Weather Wall Calendars so private message me if interested, thanks.
