YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning, everybody, and Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a good night, however you celebrated or spent your time. I do know that we saw some snow mix and changeover last night in far northwest MA and southern VT where up to 2” of wet snow was reported.
Let me know how much you got, if you saw any.
We have lots of weather changes coming, and our first day of 2025 on the first of January is poetic and appropriate time to talk about an Arctic blast, strong and potentially damaging westerly wind gusts, and high terrain accumulating snowfall, because we have all that and a bag of chips on the way for tonight tomorrow and Friday into the weekend (wind and snow is mostly tonight through tomorrow, followed by fair weather Friday into the COLD weekend).
I was up late, and am going back to sleep probably, but am gonna bust a move on some bulletized double—dashes to assist with the proliferation of my meteorological sputter-y blabberings about our upcoming ch ch ch changes!
YOUR NEW YEAR’S UN-SUMMERY SUMMARY
–We will enjoy one last mild day today with highs well into the 40s
–Mostly cloudy skies will prevail
–An isolated shower or two is possible by early afternoon
–As our storm pulls away, the cold front moves through
–As for the Wind Advisory, that will mostly affect the Berkshires, SVT and western hilltowns down into elevated areas of northwest CT
–Eventually by Thursday morning, all parts of the greater WMass region will be impacted by gusts of 30-55mph, possibly hitting 60mph as Arctic blasts into the region
–Winter Weather Advisories are up for the central and northern Berkshires into much of southern VT
–By sunset into the evening, upslope snowfall will develop over the Berkshires, northern Litchfields and southern VT with some periods of snow or snow showers into the western hilltowns
–Westerly wind gusts will combine with falling snow to producer blowing snow and lowered visibility later tonight into Thursday morning so take it slow when traveling into such areas
–Lows tonight will dip into the upper 20s to low 30s and snow may fall heavily at times
–The snow shield should at some point either side of mid-day start to shrink up and into the northern Berkshires, far western Franklin County and the southern Green Mountains of VT
–There, snow showers should continue at times into Thursday night
–Generally, 2-5” of snow is expected in the central and northern Berkshires up into much of southern VT
–There should be stripe of 5-10” in parts of eastern Bennington and western Windham Counties in VT
–A coating to 3” is possible in the northern Litchfields, southern Berkshires, and western hilltowns of WMass
–For Thursday, it will be very windy as very cold air moves in aloft and helps steepen the temperature lapse rates, and mix down a lot of the low level jet with strong and potentially damaging gusts
–Again, this will below new snow around Thursday, and cause visibility issues at times, and enhance slippery travel conditions where snow blows across and lays down on cold roads.
–Highs Thursday will only reach the mid to upper 30s, but wind chills will be down in the 20s
–Westerly winds will still gust 25-40mph Thursday night with some snow showers in SVT and the far northern Berkshires
–By Friday, wind continues to slacken as Arctic air settles in the pressure gradient eases, with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s with final snow showers in SVT winding down
–Otherwise, mostly sunny skies develop in the valley points south and east, and lows Friday night will crash into the mid to upper teens
–The weekend is even colder with sunshine and highs in the mid to upper 20s and lows in the teens
–By early next week, a storm will be developing in the southern Ohio Valley, and while it most likely goes out to sea to our south, we may see it bob north and graze areas south of the Pike in MA and CT with some light snow, but I will keep you updated.
Have a great day, and if you still would like one of my 2025 weather wall calendars (my last one ever), I literally have only 25 left, so message me and we can put it together. Thanks.
