MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, well it’s certainly nice to see a light blanket of snow after all of this unseasonably mild weather we’ve been having.
Most folks saw a coating to 2″ overnight, and snow showers will be on the wane and out of here by about mid-morning.
We’ll end up with a mostly cloudy day with highs in the mid to upper 30s as our second wave of low pressure gets set to pass to our north.
With the cold air that our departing coastal wave this morning has pulled in, it will be cold enough to snow in the high terrain of the Berkshires, western hilltowns, SVT, SWNH and the Worcester highlands west into eastern Franklin County.
Snow there (and rain in much of the Pioneer Valley) this late afternoon and evening will accumulate another Coating to 2″, maybe 3″ in elevated parts of southern VT or West County (i.e. western Franklin). The valley and northern CT may see some fresh coatings late, but it’s more likely to be rain showers there.
Lows tonight will drop into the mid to upper 20s, so watch for black ice patches in the morning.
Wednesday starts off very nicely with sunshine and highs will climb into the mid to upper 30s, with some low 40s in northern CT possible.
Clouds will build quickly though, high to mid clouds first, then lower ones by sunset, and a brief period of snow will move in tomorrow evening. It’s possible that 1-3″ may fall before a changeover, but I’ll have to dial this in better by tomorrow.
This will likely quickly to change to a mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain as the night wears on, with slippery travel developing by or after midnight.
As it looks now, we should get this warm frontal pulse of icy precip, but then as tends to happen with warm fronts, we’ll get some drier air to move in behind it, so Thursday itself now appears to be more of a scattered, light-icy day, with freezing drizzle possible at times, and plain rain in northern CT at times.
Highs will only reach the low 30s for many of us, possibly mid 30s in northern CT, with lows in the 20s.
The worst icing transpires over the eastern Berkshires into the western hilltowns and along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor in MA, VT and NH.
A final pulse with a second shortwave brings some more icing Thursday night, and then we’ll dry out by Friday morning
Any snow showers Friday morning lead to partial sunshine and blustery conditions as a cold front sweeps the region, with highs in the low 30s and then dropping through the day with northwest gusts to 30mph or so at times.
Lows will only be in the single digits!! However, wind should be slackening overnight, so hopefully the worst wind chills won’t be realized.
Partly sunny skies move in with high pressure Saturday, but it will be cold with highs in the 20s, and lows in the teens as a period of snow showers moves into the region, lasting into part of Sunday with highs in the 30s, and a fair weather start to next week.
After that, we are heading into March, and there are definitely more storm signals, and some wintry precipitation is expected, but we’ll see who those storms pan out and come into focus as we get closer to them.
All this to say, our active pattern doesn’t end with Thursday’s storm!

“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
