Good afternoon folks, I just wanted to post a quick update regarding our quick snow burst coming tomorrow afternoon.
This will be interesting to monitor, because we’re going to have a storm system tracking east into New England.
As this system approaches, southerly winds will develop on its east side (that would be us in the WMass region), and they will gust 20-30mph as a low level jet passes overhead, mainly during the afternoon.
However, after lows tonight in the low to mid teens, it will be quite cold and dry tomorrow morning before the storm system arrives.
This will setup a strong overrunning surfaces, and with southerly winds slamming up and over the cold dome over WMass and surrounding counties, as the rising air associated with the storm system passes east into our region, means a decent burst of snow is looking more likely than not for tomorrow afternoon.
In addition, the upper level jet will nearby, and could create additional lift.
This means that moderate to at times heavy snowfall is possible, north of the MA Pike and especially along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor.
First snow showers will start by late morning toward noon from west to east, then it will spread through WMass/SVT/NWCT and CMass/SWNH/NECT in the early to mid afternoon.
Now, with all that southerly flow, it will be warming in the low levels, and highs are expected to reach the low to mid 30s from north to south.
This means that we will see a mix with rain mostly south and east of Springfield, MA through southern CMass, and north-central and northeast CT.
In those areas, a coating to 1″ is possible with rain afterward.
North of those areas, we should see 1-3″ of wet snow, and I would not be surprised to see a swath of 2-5″ of wet snow in western Franklin County, northeast Berkshires, and the southern Greens into the Monadnock Region, possibly even through eastern Franklin County.
But generally, coating to 1″ from Springfield south and east, and 1-3″ north and west from Springfield.
Snow should end in the early evening tomorrow, and then lows will drop into the mid to upper 20s, so some slick spots will be possible.
Ok, just wanted to put that out there, and I will update early in the morning before 7AM with the latest info on what I shall call #LilBursty

Good morning everybody, we’re starting off with temps in the upper single digits to teens this morning, so quite chilly out there!
As high pressure crests through the region, centered to our southwest, and passes off the Mid-Atlantic coastline tonight, we are going to enjoy a perfect winter day with sunny skies and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s.
It doesn’t get anymore late February than that!
For tonight, we’ll have clear skies early which will allow for radiational cooling to setup as high pressure passes south of us and completey relaxes the pressure gradient. Lows will drop into the low to mid teens, which should provide enough remnant cool air for our warming Monday to still allow for accumulating snowfall in the Berkshires, western hilltowns, Franklin County, northern Worcester County, and SVT/SWNH.
For Monday, clouds increase in the morning, and some snow showers are possible before noon.
The bulk of the precipitation with this next system (which will track west to east through our region, with a secondary low developing south of the New England coastline) should arrive afternoon into the evening.
A south wind will developing as our parent storm will be more or less at our latitude, and with counterclockwise circulation around northern hemispheric low centers, that will provide a milder air flow, and highs should reach the low to mid 30s.
The aformentioned areas for accumulating snowfall should see 1-3″, whereas south and east of there in northern CT, central/eastern Hampshire, central/eastern Hampden and southern CMass should see more like a coating to 1″ mixed with rain. In fact, some areas may change to rain south of the Pike, but we’ll see how this plays out.
Any snow or rain showers will quit Monday night with lows in the upper 20s.
The Mildening commences for Tuesday through Thursday! High temps above freezing! No snow or ice to speak of! Snow melt aplenty with higher late Feb. sun angle! Peanut butter and Fluff sandwiches for everybody!
Well, maybe not that last one, but you get the picture.
Highs will reach the upper 30s to low 40s on Tuesday, the low to mid 40s on Wednesday and the upper 30s to low 40s on Thursday, before a cold front moves through at night and brings seasonably cold air back in for Friday and Saturday with highs in the 20s and 30s.
Lows Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the upper 20s to low 30s with lows in the teens on Thursday.
Sky cover will be mostly cloudy on Tuesday with a chance of a rain or high terrain snow shower, with partly sunny skies Wednesday and Thursday.
Fair weather will extend through Friday and Saturday, until our next chance for inclement weather which will be next Sunday as we wrap up the 2nd month of 2021.
