MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, we’ve got strengthening milder southwest flow being driven into New England this late-week period ahead of an incoming frontal system that will push some showery conditions into our hills and dales by tomorrow afternoon, night, and the morning of New Year’s Day.
The milder air is evidenced by a temperature inversion this morning with the SVT mountain peaks in the mid to upper 40s while it’s in the upper 20s to mid 30s in northern MA and southwest NH!
As this milder air overrides cooler air at the surface, we get periods of clouds like many of us are seeing this morning, and that will continue off and on today, with sunny periods mixed in – a mixed sky day is expected.
Highs will reach the upper 40s to mid 50s, and lows tonight will dip into the mid 30s to low 40s with patchy fog expected.
For New Year’s Eve day, we’ll be clouding up, and see scattered showers developing by afternoon into the evening. Highs will reach the upper 40s to low 50s with increased humidity and patchy fog as a result.
For New Year’s Eve itself, we may get lucky and see a lull in the action sometime before midnight with a few showers around, with heavier rains by or just after midnight.
However, with patchy fog expected, take it easy on the roads as any rain and fog will combine to slow travel down, and be extra alert to any drunken boneheads while you’re at it (sadly, I was once one of those DBs waaaaay back in the day – today marks 14 years sober for me, actually).
Lows will be mild and above freezing, dipping into the upper 30s to mid 40s.
Showers continue New Year’s morning, and then quit by noon with some partly sunny skies possible by end of the day, with highs in the 45-50º range. West winds will gust behind the front up to 25mph, and lows will drop down to the upper 20s to low 30s.
Monday and Tuesday and look generally fair with partly sunny skies and highs in the 45-50º range with lows in the 30s as brief subsidence works in ahead of the next frontal wave.
Tuesday night into Thursday looks showery and mild, with highs in the low 60s by Wednesday, and then the 50s on Thursday with a frontal passage expected.
Behind this system, we will see a breakdown of the trough-west / ridge-east pattern that has fostered such mild conditions, with colder temps expected late week into next weekend, with cold looking to hang in there the following week, but that’s putting the Grinch-dog before the overstuffed 20-foot tall Grinch-sled!
Have a great day, and today is last call for my 2023 weather calendars with gorgeous and local WMass photos at the link below: I won’t be doing one next year, so order today!

AND REMEMBER…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
