YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, freezing rain and freezing drizzle is ongoing with accidents reported and below freezing temperatures.
Please be careful on road ways if you must travel or if you have to walk your dog etc., gear up as it is VERY slippery out there in many areas.
Temps are already above freezing in some of the high terrain areas in SVT, WMass etc., and we’re also above freezing in parts of eastern Hampden county, southern Worcester County and northern CT.
However, much of the CT River Valley is below freezing, and so even when precip winds down (which it is doing at 7am prior to another round of light precip to come toward mid-morning) freezing drizzle will be possible.
Winter Weather Advisories continue through 1pm for icing.
Temps will not budge much in the valley itself, likely coming up into the mid to upper 30s, though some areas may hang in the low to mid 30s, while we rise into the low to mid 40s in northern CT, southern CMass and even some high terrain areas as a temperature inversion sets up (an inversion is when temps are higher at elevation in the hills/mountains than in the valley / lower elevations.
In addition, it appears that fog (and some drizzle) will be developing later this afternoon and especially overnight as the warm front that tried to push through today gets initially thwarted to our south.
In fact, Dense Fog Advisories may be needed tonight, so travel may be slow going later this evening, just a heads up.
Lows tonight will hang in the 35-40º range, and by Sunday morning our warm front finally gets enough oomph to push north through the region, bringing a period of rain showers, and milder temps for Sunday.
Still, “The Valley Effect” may keep our temps cooler in the Pioneer Valley compared to the surrounding hills and areas to our south which could rise into the upper 40s to low 50s, whereas the valley hangs more in the low to mid 40s.
Folks, the temperatures today and tomorrow are very tricky to forecast given remnant cold and other factors, so I will continue to try and get a handle on it, but that’s how it looks now.
After Sunday morning showers, we enter a lull, then our cold front sweeps in from the southwest and we see much steadier and heavier rainfall late Sunday night into a wert Monday morning commute.
Highs Monday will soar into the low to mid 50s with all old cold having been finally scoured out of the valley, with rain abating by afternoon with lows near freezing.
Tuesday and New Year’s Eve look quite nice with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s, with temps by midnight near 40º and *hopefully• still dry before ANOTHER storm moves in with more rain, at least initially.
New Year’s Day looks stormy with rain and high terrain snow possible with highs in the mid 30s to mid 40s, followed by some lake effect snow shower potential and colder and breezier conditions late week as cold is set to return to the greater WMass region, in advance of a winter storm signal for January 6/7, so please check back with me, and be safe out there this morning!
Have a great day!
