Good morning everybody, we’ve had some light snow flare up overnight and this will be departing through mid to late morning as our system pulls away to the east.
The Winter Solstice rolled through our longitude just after 4am, and so today will feature just over 9 hours of daylight, but I don’t think we will see much sunlight, though best chance for sunny breaks will be in the valley, cloudier in the hills and mountains.
An Arctic air mass is emptying into the region today, and northwest gusts will pick up to 15-30mph at times. This will cause blowing snow for some, and briefly reduced visibility later this afternoon and tonight.
Highs will only reach the 20s and then fall back, with wind chills already heading down into the single digits to near 0º later this afternoon with a few flurries or isolated snow showers possible.
A Cold Weather Advisory (a new NWS product, replacing Wind Chill products) has been hoisted for Berkshire County tonight, and temps are going to crash into the single digits and down near zero, with perhaps some sub-zero readings in southern VT and far northwest MA.
In addition, as Canadian high pressure continues to build in from the west and northwest, the pressure gradient will be preserved, and so wind gusts tonight of up to 25mph should persist, driving wind chill temps below zero for just about everybody in the greater WMass region, with potential for 10 to as much as 20 below zero in Berkshire County. Clear skies should develop.
Cold Weather Advisories may need to be expanded into the western hilltowns today for tonight.
Sunday will be the coldest day of the now-Winter season (that was fast, Day 2!) with highs only in the teens, with perhaps a few upper singles highs in SVT! It will be breezy but less so than today/tonight, and it will be sunny.
Lows will crash due to radiational cooling as winds slacken along with clear skies expected and very dry air in place.
Lows air temps will drop below zero in northwest MA, southern VT and southwest NH, with single digits above zero elsewhere.
Monday is cold, yes, but it will be trending back towards seasonable (highs in the 30s) with sunshine and highs in the mid 20s under early sunshine with high clouds building in late.
Lows will then drop into the teens overnight as clouds thicken with snow developing later Monday night as an Alberta Clipper system dives southeast out of Ontario Province.
We should wake up Christmas Eve Day with light snow falling as our weak system works through the region and departs by afternoon, after leaving about a coating to 2” of new snow.
If the above forecast holds through Tuesday, we’re getting a White Christmas, which is great news for many of those who celebrate, including this writer.
Highs Tuesday reach the low to mid 30s with lows Christmas Eve dropping down into the mid to upper teens under mostly cloudy skies.
Christmas Day looks lovely with sunshine and highs again reaching the low to mid 30s, with Christmas Night bottoming out to either side of 20º.
The late week period into the weekend looks to feature milder fair weather with highs in the 35-40º range, and then we look to a possible wet system around New Year’s Eve, but I will update that we get closer.
