Western Mass Regional Weather for December 20, 2021 (updated 8:20pm)

LIGHT FREEZING RAIN OR FREEZING DRIZZLE POSSIBLE VERY EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING, ESPECIALLY EAST OF THE I-91 CORRIDOR… CHRISTMAS SNOW, IF IT SNOWS AT ALL, WOULD FALL AFTER MIDNIGHT IN THE PRE-DAWN HOURS AND LIKELY TURN TO RAIN BEFORE NOON… 8:20PM Monday… Good evening everybody, we’ve got lighter southwest winds overnight with lows in the low to mid 20s under partly cloudy skies.

Tuesday looks like a calm, dry day with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s as high pressure pulls away south and east.

At night, clouds will build as a coastal storm runs up the eastern seaboard, but likely too far east to give WMass any real weather to speak of.

Still, given that lows will be in the low to mid 20s with clouds increasing, a modest area of lift moving overhead, and the low center passing close enough to the southeast to graze northeast CT and eastern portions of Worcester County, we should see some areas of freezing rain, freezing drizzle, or even a few snow showers overnight.

Some slick spots should develop in Worcester County and/or Tolland and Windham County in CT, but such spots should be patchy and not widespread.

Any activity wanes with the passing of Wednesday morning, and eventually highs rise into the upper 30s to low 40s so any icing threat will be short lived, and the sun will make a re-appearance in the afternoon.

A cold front swings through at night, and brings lows into the low 20s, and Thursday looks blustery, cold, and sunny with highs only in the upper 20s to mid 30s.

Friday will see clouds develop as a warm front approaches from the northwest, with highs in the mid to upper 30s.

With lows expected in the 20s, and cold air preceding THIS frontal boundary, we should get some snow to develop late on Christmas Eve into Christmas morning, but the warm front is likely to keep on trucking east, which would flip us to sleet and then rain showers by Christmas Day with highs in the 35-40º range.

So, some of us may see a white Christmas – for a time, before it rains on our yuletide parade.

That’s the story, morning glories, have a great night!

6:45AM-MON: FAIR WEATHER UNTIL WEDNESDAY WHEN CMASS/NORTHEAST CT MIGHT GET GRAZED BY AN OUT TO SEA OCEAN STORM WITH A FEW RAIN OR FREEZING RAIN SHOWERS… A WARM FRONT BRINGS SOME LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS THURSDAY NIGHT, AND THEN ANOTHER STORM TRACKING NORTHWEST OF US BRINGS SNOW TO RAIN SHOWERS ON CHRISTMAS DAY, THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW…

Good morning folks, it is most chilly outside this morning with many temps well down into the teens, and some single digits are even being read in northwest MA and especially southern VT.

Our weather is fairly pedestrian this week with a couple of light chances at some precip, a bit of a wind, with the big news being some inclement weather on Christmas Day. While it’s notable for alone, this doesn’t look like a big storm – just a potential for morning snow showers turning to sleet / rain showers, but before we hop, skip and jump into our salient weather details, I’ve got a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, who just opened a new location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER BULLETIN:
–High pressure will be nudging northeast into the region today, which allows for mostly sunny skies, calmer wind, and highs in the low to mid 30s
–For tonight, weak low pressure will track far north of us, and but will help induce a bit stronger southwesterly flow and winds could gust over 20mph at times
–Skies should fill with a bit more clouds, but should remain partly cloudy with lows in the low to mid 20s
–For Tuesday, the southwest flow will prop us up into the 35-40º range for temps under mostly sunny skies with lows in the mid 20s
–For Wednesday, a big ocean storm will be tracking well off the east coast, and southeast of Nantucket, mostly leaving us dry, but it may A) form a trough with a weaker storm to our north and produce some freezing or regular drizzle Wednesday morning and B) grace CMass and northeast CT with some rain or sleet showers
–Otherwise, we should be on the drier side, with highs in the mid to upper 30s with lows near 20º under clearing skies
–On Thursday, it’ll be blustery and cold with highs in the low to mid 30s under mostly sunny skies with a few light snow showers at night with a warm frontal passage, and lows in the low 20s
–On Friday, expect partly sunny skies with highs in the mid 30s with clouds increasing at night
–Christmas Day looks potentially snowy very early, and then wet with rain, preceded by a brief period of sleet as a warm front moves through the region
–Secondary low development is possible that could prolong the cold, but we’re still many days away so it’s just something to watch for now, but XMas Day travel plans could be affected

Have a great day!
